Video codec H.264

When using Fedora 44 with KDE Plasma, the H.264 video codec was not found in Dragon Player. Please fix this in a future update.

Fedora is great—keep it up and keep improving!

What is the output of dnf list --installed *ffmpeg* *264* *265* *gstreamer*

these codecs are not part of the iso you download for a reason, it is software fedora cant redistribute for legal reasons, there is alot of that kind of software, there was a time when distros couldnt redistribute nvidia drivers

this is something you cant fix, it is a legal situation, it is annoying, but happens for a reason, and it happens on other dsitros too

https://rpmfusion.org/ is the solution

Rpnfusion is the legal workaound, not a solution in the sense that fedora cannot ship the rpmfusion packages by default.

They said 264, which comes from Cisco repo.

Maybe they meant 265 though?

Fedora installations cannot include the H.264 codec for licensing reasons.
However, fedora installs a package noopenh264 and the very first online update after installation replaces that package with the openh264 package from the fedora-cisco-openh264 repo, as can be seen here.

Packages altered:
  Action Package Reason Repository
  Install openh264-0:2.6.0-3.fc44.x86_64 Dependency fedora-cisco-openh264
  Install mozilla-openh264-0:2.6.0-3.fc44.x86_64 Dependency fedora-cisco-openh264
  Replaced noopenh264-0:2.6.0-4.fc44.x86_64 Dependency @System

If you tried running Dragon Player before performing an update then not having that codec is user error. Update your system and the H.264 codec will be installed.

did you blamed a new user for not knowing all that? seriously? user error? honestly, the things people write sometimes.

Good to know. I never knew this. Does it mean that RPMFusion codecs are not needed? For which codecs do I need the codecs from RPMFusion?

H265 is the main one needed from RPMFusion.

Thanks for the clarification! So I stay with installing codecs and drivers from RPMFusion. :+1:

Yes, stay with rpmfusion.
You need to either upgrade ffmpeg to the full version from rpmfusion
sudo dnf install ffmpeg --allowerasing (which gets everything needed and removes the conflicting fedora packages) recommended
or install the libavcodec package separately
sudo dnf install libavcodec (which pulls in almost all the codecs available.)

I personally have added the x264, x265 and libheif-freeworld packages which do provide for some additional codecs beyond those included with libavcodec.

Thanks a lot, too!

Normally, I go the “manual way” from the configuration page and install what matches my system specs.
