Unable to boot into current Kernel

Hello everyone,
I’m new to all of this, so please be easy on me and be prepared to walk me through it, because I have a feeling this is going to be above my pay grade.

I’ve been running Fedora since July, and everything has been fantastic. About three weeks ago, I downloaded and installed an update that didn’t go according to plan. During reboot, the update failed, and the computer just hung on a black screen for about 30 minutes until I decided to do a hard shutdown. Now, when I turn the computer on, I have the option to boot into the following kernels: 6.16.9, 6.16.8, or 6.16.7.

Kernel 6.16.9 boots to a black screen.

If anyone here has the patience to help me with a detailed walkthrough of how to solve this, I would be very grateful.

Thank you.

Select kernel 6.16.9, wait until the black screen appears, then shut down the PC and boot with the previously working kernel. After that, run the following commands and share the output:
journalctl -b -1 -p err (this shows the error log from the previous session)
and
inxi -Fzxx.

Hi @ihopethisworks

Do you by any chance have a new Intel iGPU (I have a Lunar Lake 140V) using the Xe driver? That was broken in the 6.16.9 but works again in the 6.16.10.

…you can verify with this command after a failed boot and then booting to working kernel (this is from my system after failed boot 6.16.9 and booting back in previous kernel):

❯ sudo journalctl -b -1 -k | grep -i i915
okt 05 00:14:08 x1 kernel: xe 0000:00:02.0: [drm] Finished loading DMC firmware i915/xe2lpd_dmc.bin (v2.28)
okt 05 00:14:26 x1 kernel: pci 0000:00:1f.3: deferred probe pending: sof-audio-pci-intel-lnl: init of i915 and HDMI codec failed

The -b -1 option pull from the second latest boot.

The second line is the culprit - some mixup between the new Xe driver and the old i915 still holding firmware for the display controller, I believe.

Anyway, I booted to the earlier kernel until the 6.16.10 was released, and now everything works again.

I took the liberty of editing your post and added the preformatted text tags to your inxi data. This restored the formatting seen on-screen so it is more readable.

When pasting data that you copy and paste please use those tags and keep the data more readable. Doing so it as easy as highlight the text after it is pasted then click the </> button on the toolbar at the top of the text entry screen.

IgorB.,
Thank you!

Yup, Ultra 7 258V. You are correct. Downloading 6.16.10 was the fix.

Thank you for the help with my formatting. I think the mixup in formatting was copying from one computer and pasting to a different computer. Sorry about that.

Same CPU as me - same issue
