The newly installed Fedora 42 keeps spinning in circles after booting, but the upgraded F42 (from F41) starts up normally

When selecting 6.14.0 in GRUB, the system starts booting but then gets stuck at the spinning animation.
The issue persists regardless of whether Secure Boot and TPM are enabled or disabled.

You can hit the ESC button and see the boot messages for more information of the problem. Also you can try to boot an older kernel from the boot menu and see if that works.

It has an issue with the disk with the uuid you see on the last line.

Did you edit /etc/fstab since installing the system?
Did you change the grub command line?

This could be caused by:

  • The disk being physically disconnected or failed.
  • The UUID being incorrect or changed (especially after cloning or repartitioning).
  • An fstab misconfiguration (/etc/fstab).

Potenital fix:

  • Boot into a Live system from USB, and:

    • Run lsblk or blkid to check available partitions and UUIDs.
    • Compare them with /etc/fstab in your installed system (/mnt/etc/fstab after mounting your root partition).
  • If UUIDs don’t match: update /etc/fstab with the new UUID.

  • Check if the disk is actually failing using smartctl (part of package smartmontools).

@augenauf @barryascott Thank you for the tips. The reason is that I encountered multiple errors when installing F42 to the USB disk, possibly due to cable or insufficient power supply causing data corruption. Now, I’ve switched to a different computer and cables for the attempt, and it succeeded on the first try.
