Surprisingly, I don’t see many people raving about the ebook reader Foliate that’s available for Fedora. It’s such a fantastic way to read ebooks, but not just ebooks.
I read a lot of stuff online. But I love reading with an ebook reader. So I just have a script to download some online stuff I read and create an epub ebook out of it, and then I just read it with Foliate or Cool Reader. Foliate, however, is the most beautiful way to read!
Important! There are some things you should do in Foliate before you read anything with it, before it becomes the most gorgeous reading experience ever.
Change the default font right away. I use C059 font or Inglobal font. Those are the most beautiful fonts that make reading so pleasurable.
The default font size must be increased, usually, depending on the size of your screen.
Also, change the color scheme. I found “Solarized” color scheme to be superb for both day reading and night reading, but watch out for eyegasms.
And change the default margins and line height - very important for the most beautiful reading experience ever.
Full screen it and choose “Auto-hide cursor” in settings.
These are the secrets to book nirvana. Do this, and you’ll love reading just purely for reading on top of reading something interesting too.
Foliate is great, I agree. I just wish I had a way to search and navigate common threads between all my books, at a bit higher level than paging through and taking notes. Any recommendations for that kind of software?
I don’t even remember how I found Foliate (I guess I was looking for something lighter than Calibre for ebook formats) but now I can’t live without it.
Ok, there’s a major problem about Foliate that I uncovered. When I open a book, it launches Webkitgtk and bubblewrap. No one wants that to be run by default, it’s not secure. It needs to run on demand.
Worse, Foliate does NOT launch when I ran it in firejail. And firejail has a Foliate profile by default. It’s unclear why Foliate fails to launch inside a firejail. This would be a death sentence for Foliate for me. Can someone help with this, or is this a firejail issue?
UPD: I guess foliate might be using webkit for rendering book pages?? Then definitely need firejail to work.
