Speaker makes popping noises

The Problem

My speaker makes popping noises:

  • when in suspend and charging (suspend → charge → popping noises)
    • at seemingly random times, when in suspend and charging, dozens of repeating pops happen at about three a second (repeating pops → silence for uncertain time → repeating pops → …)
  • when woken from suspend (suspend → press ‘Power’ to turn on → popping noises)
    • immediately after ‘Power’ is pressed to wake from suspend, a singular pop is made
    • then, sometimes, several seconds after wake, dozens of repeating pops happen at about three a second (pop pop pop pop pop…)
  • when sound is made for the first time thereafter (wake from suspend → make sound (video, system sound, etc.) → popping noises)
    • regardless of when the computer was woken from suspend, the first sound always generates a pop
    • after the first pop, initiating sounds does not make more pops
  • at seemingly random times (just be working on laptop → popping noises)
    • I will just be working on the PC, volume off and working without any videos or music or other sounds, and a pop is made just randomly.

Before this, I had the issue of a popping noise being made every time a sound was initiated (initiate sound → popping noise → wait a few seconds → initiate sound → popping noise → …).
I did my research and fixed this issue by disabling sound device suspend by adding ["session.suspend-timeout-seconds"] = 0 to 50-alsa-config.lua in /etc/wireplumber/main.lua.d.
While this issue was fixed, the popping continues in the behaviour as described above.

What I’ve Tried

As aforementioned, I have added ["session.suspend-timeout-seconds"] = 0 to 50-alsa-config.lua in /etc/wireplumber/main.lua.d.
Additionally, I tried adding ["node.pause-on-idle"] = false to the config file as well but that didn’t seem to help so I removed it.

I tested the issue on Windows 10, and no popping ever occurred. I have not tested on other Linux distributions.

What I Want to Happen

I want popping noises to not happen at all.
Please help!

Unbelievable. Switching to PulseAudio fixed ALL the issues. Speaker is silent and does not make any popping noises (so far).

I followed Changes/DefaultPipeWire - Fedora Project Wiki and ran the command
sudo dnf swap --allowerasing pipewire-pulseaudio pulseaudio.

Hey I have the same problem with an almost identical hardware setup.

Swapping to pulseaudio did not fix my issue though. So I figured I’d check in to see if you’re still having this issue if you’ve updated to Fedora 37?

Edit: I will add that not only did the popping not go away but youtube videos failed to play. Not that they failed to make any sound, they refused to start playback on chromium and firefox. This is after a reboot. Reinstalled pipewire and I’ll just aplay /dev/zero -f S16 in the background from now on.

The solution @bryan posted does not work for me.

Gathering system info ..............................

None of the solutions in the topic have fixed the problem. I currently use an mp3 file called “1 hour of silence” (downloaded off youtube to mp3) and had that playing in the background on repeat to make the popping go away.

Also worth noting, I had this same issue on Linux Mint, but was able to fix it by disabling some power saving mode. I created the config file and I’m not too sure if it’s being used, that would be my best guess as to what’s going wrong. Am I able to run a command to see where the config file is supposed to be?

Edit: This makes the popping stop, but it’s very jerry-rigged. You have to have both nvlc and tmux installed for this to work. You can close the terminal and it just plays forever until you reboot.
tmux new -d "nvlc ~/Desktop/1-hour-of-silence.mp3 -R"

FWIW, another forum user recently recommended this workaround: Loud clicking sound coming from speakers at reboot unless pipewire.service is stopped - #10 by sevoos

But that was for KDE, so I guess you’d have to modify it to do something similar on Fedora Workstation.

Thanks, I checked that out, but I’m pretty sure my issue is different from theirs. My audio popping (and OP’s I believe) happens with a popping noise every second, theirs is a single loud noise on rebooting. I’m pretty sure it’s some kind of driver glitch related to power-saving, since after playing any audio it goes away, and then comes back after ~10 seconds or so. That’s probably why playing an empty mp3 file on loop makes it go away. I was able to solve this issue in the past on Linux Mint by disabling power saving mode.

I also tried the tuner solution, but that had no effect.

I created the file /etc/wireplumber/main.lua.d/50-alsa-config.lua and added OP’s suggested contents, my hunch is that that config file might be named wrong, or that there’s something wrong with the contents. I’ll have to do some more digging to check that.
