Some apps are just blank and unusable

Hey guys, not sure what happened or if I installed something wrong but some of my applications like Firefox (flatpak) and gnome-control-center are just showing as blank when I open them. If I select them from overview, it stays as blank and can’t select anything from it. This issue doesn’t happen on all gnome/flatpak apps.

I already upgraded to Fedora 38, but same issue

Any idea how can I troubleshoot this further? What log files should i look for to view related errors

Here is my screencast -

What’s your GPU?

Nvidia, as suspected. If you have an integrated GPU, you can try to switch to that one (e.g. disable your external GPU in BIOS, or remove it from the desktop) and see if problems are fixed. If you can’t switch to an iGPU, you can try to use the opposite driver for your nvidia gpu - i.e. nvidia proprietary driver, if you’re currently using nouveau, or nouveau, if you’re currently using the proprietary driver. Nvidia cards are very problematic, I’m sorry.

If you are on Wayland, switch to Xorg. Then that likely will solve the issue.

tried switching to nouveau but half of the screen is dead (external monitor only) -

firefox and other apps are now loading properly, but screen is half white

looks like nvidia issue - see my reply below

Is your system fully updated? dnf upgrade --refresh

What version of the nvidia drivers were installed? and from where?
We can see that with the output of dnf list installed '*nvidia*'?
What is the output of inxi -Fzx? Which will show us the hardware config.

I’m on Silverblue so dnf will not work. inxi is also not installed

You had not previously noted that you were using silverblue. I added that to the tags above.

oh yeah, forgot to mention that. but issue just went back. I already have updated drivers and followed steps here - Howto/NVIDIA - RPM Fusion

one of the errors when opening gnome apps (gnome-control-center) is this:

Gdk-Message: 20:00:44.314: Error reading events from display: Protocol error

researching further, looks like this is an nvidia issue just like the first reply suggested on this post. No hopes for Nvidia?

I recommend trying out the Universal Blue images with the NVIDIA drivers to see if this solves your issue:

thanks for recommendation. I switched to uBlue but same issue. Gnome apps like Settings are not opening:
