Neal Stephenson (Diamond Age, Snow Crash) has a great short piece called In the Beginning was the Command Line where he says that Windows is like the family sedan, Apple is like a sports car and Linux is a free tank. With the free tank, you get free support, better features - but you have to maintain it youself. No one wants the free tanks.
