Problems with Nvidia Drivers after (presumably) a couple of system upgrades

It seems after either a few system upgrades or NVIDIA driver updates, my closed source NVIDIA drivers are not working which is making playing Steam games impossible.

I tried to run sudo dnf update , and got this result:

Sorry if this is a lengthy post, if i’ve posted incorrectly or in a format that could have made this post easier to read, please do let me know. Anyways, how can I fix this issue simply?

Did you setup modular stuff?
I did not need modular with the rpmfusion nvidia drivers.
Can you undo whatever you did?

As of right now, it seems I have been able to fix the problem. A discussion in another post found a solution that had also fixed my problem: Akmod-Nvidia conflicting peer dependencies

It seems my games are still lagging terribly though. Would I have to reboot my system or run another command to make sure that the closed source drivers are actually working?

Wait, it does not seem to have fixed anything. Alright i’m not too sure where to go from here.

Check which driver is loaded for your gpu. Is it nvidia or neuvous?
lsmod will tell you. If it is neuvous then akmod did not build the nvidia driver
And you will need to fix that.

I’m not sure, but according to the output, Nouveau is being used by 98 programs (i’m assuming it means programs) & the i2c_nvidia_gpu is being used by 0

That means one of two rhongs.

  1. you do not have nvidia drivers built for your current kernel.
  2. you have secure boot enabled, but you are not signing the nvidia drivers.

If 1 the us akmod to force a build of the drivers (sorry forget the exact command ),
If 2 either turn off secure boot in the bios or read the rpmfusion nvidia docs on signing the driver.

It seems the most common cause of that problem has been installing cuda packages from the fedora-cuda repos.

Please post the output of dnf repolist and dnf module list active so we can make suggestions.

If the second shows that the module nvidia-driver is enabled then one would need to run dnf module disable nvidia-driver to disable it. Once that is done then the conflicts should disappear.

I also have a problem with Balena Etcher when it comes to its repository, but currently i don’t think that’s too important to fix right now.

That appears to show no nvidia-driver module installed, but the cuda-fedora37-12-1-local repo is troubling.
I would suggest that you disable that repo with
sudo dnf config-manager --disable cuda-fedora*.

Additionally I see a lot of errors related to packages installed from that repo.
nvidia-driver, nvidia-driver-libs, kmod-nvidia*, cuda-runtime, cuda-drivers, nvidia-driver-cuda Those are all conflicting with attempts to install packages from rpmfusion.

I would suggest removing all those noted packages, then verify the remaining nvidia packages with dnf list installed '*nvidia*'. Please post that output here.

If you look carefully at my post that was
sudo dnf config-manager --disable cuda-fedora*

Now I suggest you add the following
sudo dnf install xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda
and
sudo dnf reinstall akmod-nvidia which should properly build the kmod-nvidia package for the currently running kernel.

Ok, then the issue is still something modular causing the error with the cuda install.

To see if there are still cuda packages installed please run dnf list installed '*cuda*' as well as checking the modular issue
From this thread I find that running the command
sudo dnf module disable nvidia-driver
will probably solve the issue. That also links to the instructions for installing cuda from rpmfusion.

Hi Jeff. I’m getting the modular conflicts after the latest upgrade of my f37 os:
eg
- package nvidia-settings-3:535.104.05-1.fc37.x86_64 from cuda-fedora37-x86_64 is filtered out by modular filtering
- package nvidia-settings-3:535.104.05-1.fc37.x86_64 from rpmfusion-nonfree-nvidia-driver is filtered out by modular filtering

I assume that my conflicting sources are cuda-fedora37-x86_64 and RPMFusion.

Since my OS is still working, do you advise to wait until these conflicts are resolved, or is there a simple action I could take?

This is not a fedora or rpmfusion repo right? From nvidia directly?
If i am correct then you need to remove that repo and any rpms you installed from it. Cuda is in rpmfusion repos that you should use.

Indeed it is from NVIDIA - I checked the URL. disabling removed the conflict.

The cuda-fedoraXX repo does seem to always cause conflicts.

The cuda driver installed from rpmfusion as the xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda has always seemed to me to provide the same functions so packages from the noted cuda repo have never been required on my system.
