OpenSnitch - Anyone using? Could it be packaged for Fedora?

After leaving Mac (where i used Little Snitch for years to block/monitor app and OS connections) I am looking for something similar for Fedora. I found what looks like the perfect solution, OpenSnitch (GitHub - evilsocket/opensnitch: OpenSnitch is a GNU/Linux interactive application firewall inspired by Little Snitch.)

Being a nervous and inexperienced Fedora (Linux) user, I am trying to avoid installing anything ‘manually’ (i.e. outside of the Fedora repo or Flathub). So I am hesitant to install but really will have to I think.

Just wondered how we go about suggesting/asking people to consider this app for inclusion in the Software repo, so it can be installed inside Fedora nicely and safely for dumbers like me

After years on Mac, and years using Little Snitch to block unwanted network connections by installed apps (or more so, the OS itself on Mac), I looked for something similar for Fedora now that I’m using it.

I found OpenSnitch - Release v1.6.5 · evilsocket/opensnitch · GitHub

I don’t see it in the Software app in Fedora OS, does this mean it’s not advisable to install it? I’d really like to, and there’s an RPM which I think means I can install it. Grateful for any thoughts on installing it, or comments from anyone who may already be using it.
thanks

Yes, i use it. it is one of the first things i install. I have had no issues so far with it.
I am on x64 so i download the x86_64 core, and then the ui_noarch.
If for some reason it does not autostart the daemon after you’ve installed both, you can
sudo systemctl enable --now opensnitch.service

Thanks very much.

I don’t know what x64 means. I have a Dell 5420 I am about to move to with Fedora 40, I suspect it is x64 (I know that means something to do with hardware!)

Can I ask, how do you use it in practice?

On Mac I used Little Snitch for two main reasons:

  1. To KNOW what connections my programs are making
  2. To DENY some OR all of them, usually some, but occasionally all.

Is that possible with OpenSnitch? Does it work in a similar way to LS, i.e. when a new connection is detected, it prompts to allow/deny, once/forever? If so, I can’t wait to try installing!
Thanks again

x64 means 64 bit. the Vast majority, if not all, modern PCs are 64 bit. as opposed to the older 32bit.

To KNOW what connections my programs are making
To DENY some OR all of them, usually some, but occasionally all.

Yes, Open Snitch will allow you to do both of those things.

when a new connection is detected, it prompts to allow/deny, once/forever?

That is correct, when a connection is detected, it allows you to do exactly that.

It should do everything you need. Goodluck, and you’re welcome
