Clean build on new disk on my rog strix laptop yesterday.
This morning installed torch and the latest updates and on the next boot (and every boot now) I get
NVIDIA kernel module missing falling back to nouveau
How do I get the nvidia drivers working again?
Problem seems to be (from dmesg):
nvidia: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel
but I am not using secure boot. BIOS settings are:
BIOS: admin password set
fast boot disabled
secure boot disabled
All the info I find suggests that this error is related to secure boot, but I have secure boot disabled.

Whenever you update the kernel, it re-compiles the Nvidia driver for the new kernel. When you do an update and there’s a new kernel, DNF will say complete but you’ll wanna give it about 5 minutes to complete compiling in the background before you reboot the system or this happens. It’s been a while since I’ve had to deal with it and can’t remember if you wanna use drakut or dkms to fix it. You can also reboot to the previous kernel and run dnf reinstall kernel and have it do it over again.

Oh! that’s sneaky. I’ve tried dnf reinstall kernel - the reinstall worked ok but I still get the same message and no nvidia drivers. I left the PC for 20 mins after the reinstall finished before rebooting
I might just try the nuclear option, cos I have another PC I want to rebuild and it’ll be useful to know how to avoid the problem.
You seem to have not fully updated.

This is concerning as each time I run an update I have major issues with nvidia being uninstalled.
Is there a way to bypass removingkmod-nvidia-470xx-6.1.5-200.fc37.x86_64
as when this gets removed I’m worried it will brick my system.
Or is there way to rollback to before the update like in silverblue fedora

That is no issue. whenever you upgrade the kernel, it removes the oldest still installed kernel, including the nvidia kernel module corresponding to that version of the kernel. Normally you will have three version os kernel installed and corresponding three versions of the nvidia kernel modules.
Notice the name kmod-nvidia-470xx-6.1.5-200.fc37.x86_64 has the kernel version included in the name as 6.1.5-200.fc37.x86_64 and that version only works with version 6.1.5-200.fc37.x86_64 of the kernel.
Sure thanks I understood that though when I ran the last 2 kernel updates the dnf system didn’t seem to install the Nvidia updates correctly and I was met with a message something along the lines of : " diverting back to nouveau drivers kernel version doesn’t match " (not written in those exact terms)

Please post the output of dnf list installed '*nvidia*' and inxi -Fzxx so we can see exactly what nvidia hardware and drivers you are using.

When you update your system, are you waiting 4 or 5 minutes before rebooting? When the kernel upgrades, the new Nvidia driver has to be compiled. It will say the upgrade is complete but it’s still compiling. Otherwise you’ll reboot before it completes the compile and install and it breaks your nvidia driver. It’s not a Fedora problem, it’s due to how Nvidia handles their drivers.

It may actually be a user problem where impatience and rebooting too quickly breaks the driver build. Yes, it is necessary to wait for akmod to build the driver for the new kernel.

The delay is required when doing something that involves rebuilding a kernel module.
You always have the option to use the grub menu and select an older kernel to boot. Even if the 6.1.8 kernel has a problem with the drivers you can select to boot the 6.1.7 kernel from the grub menu and be using the same kernel and nvidia driver you presently have active.

So tonight I ran this update.
Though I will be sure to wait 10 minutes before rebooting to allow for compiling.
Thank you for your help with nvidia. I shall let you know if it goes okay, rebooting now…

Happy to report the update is complete with no issues whatsoever, to be honest I think the last update I may not have waited for compiling. is that with nvidia only or other hardware and parts of the system too ?
The need to wait applies to all apps and drivers that need compiled to match a new kernel. In general it is always best to delay between installing upgrades and rebooting since a lot happens in the background that the user may not be aware of.
There have been cases where a user broke his system when the upgrade said 98% and they did not wait for it to complete but assumed it had hung instead and did a power-off reboot attempt.
