Lenovo ThinkPad Docking Gen 2 not working second monitor

Hello everyone.

I have a ThinkPad T490 attached to a Thinkpad Docking station. On the docking there are two 1080p monitors attached. The problem is that only one of them works. If I go on display settings the second monitor appears connected and active, but it’s just turned off.

I tried reboot, attach and flip the cable. Nothing. Also tried install the display link drivers. Nothing.

I’m swithing from Linux Mint, on there never had problem. Tested also on Ubuntu, no problems.

Welcome to Fedora @ironhak

Why did you make two topics with the exact same title?

Would be better, if the cases are different (gnome/KDE, also mention this in the Title.

If they are very common then better make one topic and put both tags.

Hello, Sorry. The problema Is basically the same but it appears in a certain way on gnome and another way on Kde.

That is the reason for double posting. If I did something wrong on posting please tell me and I’ll fix. Thanks

With hardware involved we do need more information about it. As you come from Debian based/depending Distributions It is probably a Kernel issue. The kernel is affecting both KDE and Workstation.

It would be good, if you post us the output from inxi -Fzxx and post it as pre formatted text </>
So we can see which Processor etc. your system uses.

You meant inxi -Fzxx right? Here it is:

Please also post the same inxi -Fzxx info from the kde system.

It would appear this may be an issue either with the docking station or with drivers for the docking station and probably should be approached in that way.
I closed the other thread since the titles were identical and even from a search it was difficult to see both threads. The only apparent difference was kde vs workstation and the docking station issue appears the same on both.
The thread I closed was

Hello, unfortunately I removed the KDE partition since I wanted to try GNOME and see if the problem was also there. So I think it would be better before to focus on fixing for GNOME, most likely the solution would work also on KDE.

It would appear this may be an issue either with the docking station or with drivers for the docking station and probably should be approached in that way.

My main system is still Linux Mint 22 (can’t move to Fedora until this is solved). On here everything works fine, there is full support for the dock (also the power button on the dock works). The dock and my bios are fully up to date as I periodically check with sudo fwupdmgr get-updates.

This is the system informations from said system (Linux Mint 22), where everything works perfectly. Thought it might be useful.

Is the firmware of the docking station up to date?
The new Kernel recognizes just the eDP while the older Kernel from Mint connects over DP

You can test the unofficial LTS version from copr.
kwizart/kernel-longterm-6.6 Copr

To see if you get the same result as with Mint.

Hello, thanks but not working. Here is what I did sequentially:

  1. sudo dnf copr enable kwizart/kernel-longterm-6.6
  2. sudo dnf install kernel-longterm
  3. sudo reboot
  4. sudo dnf install kernel-longterm-devel
  5. sudo reboot

Nothing changed (I know I’m now on a lower kernel version), this is the system info after this procedure:

Is the firmware of the docking station up to date?

You might have missed a little bit of my previous post where I said that I updated everything to last version using fwupdmgr.

Thanks for your help, I really hope this can hopefully be fixed.

Sorry to overview that. Sometimes I do save messages as draft before someone responded.

See last row of API: OpenGL it uses an older mesa driver. Could be that this is closed source or as it shows the device-ID: 8086:3ea0

  1. Try to downgrade the Mesa dirvers
  2. If this not works check with the Rawhide Iso. It uses the Kernel 6.13 already. This is the nex mainline Kernel which we will move to it soon.

Hello thank’s again for helping, but I’m afraid my expertise is not high enough to follow you:

  • Try to downgrade the Mesa dirvers: how to do so and to what version should I downgrade? Also should I downgrade it on the current kernel (6.6) or with the default one (6.11)?
  • What is “Rawhide Iso”? Is it the pre-release of Fedora 42 which will use kernel 6.13 instead of 6.11 as per current Fedora 41? Where can I find it? Would it be stable to use?

Thanks

Some distros include firmware and/or non-free modules that Fedora omits. It might be useful to compare lsmod between Fedora and a distro where 2nd monitor is working. You may be able to find firmware differences with journalctl -g firmware ,,,

On a side note

I tried running:

dnf config-manager addrepo --from-repofile=https://negativo17.org/repos/fedora-multimedia.repo && dnf install -y displaylink

This installed a new 6.12 kernel on my system. For a brief moment both monitor were working but they were duplicated and the laptpo screen was turned off. If I go to display settings then I see only one monitor, so can’t arrange/deactivate/activate other monitors. Did a reboot just to see if something changes, and then both monitors stopped working. So I’m back on 6.11.

Spending the day outside dealing with ice and snow, so can’t investigate further, but there is a fwupd problem (“Failed to get cache filename”) which would be best addressed with a new topic.

Thank’s but why should I open a new topic?.. The issue is the one outlined on this topic…

I mean there are lots of people with thinkpads and lenovo thunderbolt docking stations… I can’t be the only one with this issue. I just want to use fedora.

Yes exactly please have a look on the following page, if your device is listed. And which components might make some trouble.

Check also for the docking station. There you find some more hints which help us to know in which direction we do have to search your issue.

… hope this can be solved… Thank’s

Anyone…?

I’m sorry to spam… but I would really like to jump to fedora… but this is making it impossibile for me. Isn’t really anyone that can help? Thank’s.

It is up to you to do the legwork needed to check differences between working and failing systems using journalctl and lsmod. I can only point out a couple details that need checking:

This query should no longer be used.. The change was made over a decade ago. I use the acpi_osi=linux kernel parameter.

PackageKit Issue 752 that has been reported against Fedora 40 and 41. I doubt this is a PackageKit bug – the most likely cause is filesystem issues such as lack of free space.
