I have a MacBook Late 2008. This is what I am experiencing.
Kernel 5.19.11-100.fc35 Wifi works
Kernel 5.19.11-200.fc36 Wifi does not work
I have experienced this before with various kernels. Some kernels support the Wifi on the Late 2008 MacBook, and some do not. Obviously, this is critical to me.
Thank you.

From what I know, this hardware is not yet supported in the kernel. One has to install the kmod-wl packages from RPM Fusion to get these to work. Do you have these installed?
rpm -qa \*kmod\* \*-wl\*
If yes, it’s probably just a case of the kmod not having been re-built after the kernel upgrade.

I think a sudo dnf reinstall akmod-wl
should do it, although I wasn’t able to find docs to confirm this in a quick search.

I don’t have a machine with akmods running handy, so it’s a little hard for me to test out these commands. Sorry about that.
How about:
akmods --force
and then reboot? (It’s listed in the Nvidia howto, where kmods are also used )

Then I’m afraid I’m out of ideas. The temporary workaround here is to reboot and choose the older kernel that worked.

Thanks. That’s what I’ve been doing. The problem is I can’t do system updates anymore because the update may delete my working kernel.
As I said, I’ve had this problem before. One kernel kills it, and then a few kernels later it comes back to life. My guess is they’re inconsistently compiling something into the kernel.
Thanks for your help!!

I understand this is the platform to ask questions. Where do I go if I want to report a bug?
Thanks!
One additional step to try and fix it would be to uninstall the 5.19.11 kernel then redo the upgrade.
sudo dnf remove kernel*5.19.11*
which will remove all the kernel parts for that kernel version and dependencies.
Then do sudo dnf upgrade --refresh
which will update all the dnf metadata then upgrade everything including installing the newer kernel and rebuilding all the modules for it.
Remember always that a kernel or driver update should be followed by at least a 5 minute wait after the update completes before rebooting.
If this approach fails then bugs are reported at bugzilla.redhat.com
Just as an FYI
Dnf should never remove the kernel that is currently running. It does (by default) keep 3 only kernel versions so an upgrade removes the oldest that is not the one running when you have booted from an older kernel. This means you should never have to worry about losing the running kernel no matter how old it is.

Thanks for the info, Jeff - especially about not losing the current kernel! I am reluctant to redo the update, however, for two reasons:
I have a dog slow internet connection, and the machine in question is dog slow too. I just don’t want to spend hours on it, given #2 .
I’ve had this problem before in a situation that didn’t involve an upgrade - just a normal update. So, I am under the impression that this is due to decisions being made further up the line in terms of kernel options. The last time when I spoke about it, the following kernel just worked. I didn’t have to do anything.
What I was hoping to get is a command to list those kernel options so I can see what changes. My guess is that the system log may have some interesting information.
Thanks!

Same here. Why do you have a mix of fc35 and fc36 packages? What release are you on?
The current running kernel will not be deleted by any update. So, as long as you upgrade from within a kernel that has working wifi, you’re save.
Of course, increasing the number of kernels to keep, as suggested elsewhere, will also work.
I have an older MacBook myself, so I’d be able to follow along. Albeit, I have never experienced issues with kmod-wl module not being upgraded along with the kernel. You could try the following to see if it sheds some light on the issue:
Boot into a kernel that has an issue with wl module not being loaded, then run journalctl -b
. That will show you all messages from current boot. Look for messages regarding wl module.
