Hello to everyone,
I have a laptop Lenovo T495s running Fedora 39 without issues from the day I bought it.
Yesterday I updated to kernel 6.5.12 and this morning I discovered my USB port doesn’t detect any pen-drive!
I tried to reboot on kernel 6.5.11 and everything work.
Does anyone of you have had the same issue with the latest kernel?
im using Lenovo t570 and if im using kernel 6.5.12 i have no possibility to use network (ethernet and wifi) dmesg showing the cards but network-manager cannot use them. My workaround was too to use kernel 6.5.11 again.
For both of you,
Please provide more info. Other than the laptop model we know nothing about your hardware.
Using the inxi -Fzxx
command gives us a lot of info, as does lspci -nnk
and nmcli
and lsusb
.
please use and post the results of all those commands if possible (as text copied and pasted using the preformatted text button </>
)
@scriptwriter , your issue is different (network vs usb) so it should have its own thread for proper attention.
This is the result of all the commands
> sudo inxi -Fzxx

Great information, thanks!
The only thing missing is details of what usb devices you seem to find not usable, or what devices you have connected and are not seen. Is that pen drive possibly the device shown as Bus 004 Device 004 with lsusb?
Also what happens when you run journalctl -f
then plug in the pen drive, wait a couple minutes then remove it again.? It should show the configuration of the device as it is connected or errors if that fails.
Note that since you claim it works with kernel 6.5.11 and does not with kernel 6.5.12 then it helps to provide the above output twice – first with the working kernel and then with the non-working kernel. That way we can compare the results.
The output of command lsusb is always the same, with the pen drive inserted or not inserted, so I don’t know exactly what device is what. The laptop has two USB ports and their behaviour is the same, they both work with 6.5.11 and both don’t work with 6.5.12.
This is the output of journalctl -f with kernel 6.5.11
> sudo journalctl -f

Nothing happen when I insert and remove the pen drive, it seems the USB ports are completely disabled.
This (above) is the device when using kernel 6.5.11
Absolutely no indication of a device when you connect it with 6.5.12.
This is really strange.
Lets see the result of booting into the 6.5.12 kernel then run journalctl -b | grep usb
after plugging in the pen drive. Try to tell us the time it was connected.
There may be more clues in the logs when initially starting which this may show.
This is the output, there’s an error at the end. I inserted the pen drive at 20:30:xx, there’s no indication of it.

Is this USBGuard issue 589:
With recent kernels (at least on Fedora), I have seen the USB root hubs change ports. If you have
DeviceRulesWithPort=true
(not the default) set inusbguard-daemon.conf
, your USB root hubs will be disabled after rebooting to newer kernels.
Hmmm
I wonder what other ideas someone else may be able to provide?
The entire output of dmesg
just after booting and having the device already plugged in may give another clue as well.
This seems, as you stated, that those usb ports are not even seen.
First boot with the 6.5.11 kernel with the device plugged in and run dmesg > dmesg.6.5.11.txt
then boot with the 6.5.12 kernel also leaving the device plugged in and run dmesg > dmesg.6.5.12.txt
That should give 2 files where we can compare what happens during boot to see the differences.
You might be able to see the differences easily yourself with diff dmesg.6.5.11.txt dmesg.6.5.12.txt
and if you post the diff output we may see the clues as to what is going wrong with the 6.5.12 boot. This may not work due to the timestamps for each entry though.
It happened something interesting: if I boot with 6.5.12 with the device plugged in, the pen drive is mounted and I can use it normally, but If I remove it and plug it again it doesn’t detect it like before.
I’ve tried also what you’ve suggested, but the diff file is too big, I can’t post it.
Edit the files to remove timestamps before running diff.
Ok, I removed the timestamp with sed -e s/^\[\ *[0-9]*.[0-9]*\]/[]/g dmesg.6.5.11.txt > dmesg.6.5.11.cut.txt
and sed -e s/^\[\ *[0-9]*.[0-9]*\]/[]/g dmesg.6.5.12.txt > dmesg.6.5.12.cut.txt
.
> diff dmesg.6.5.11.cut.txt dmesg.6.5.12.cut.txt

In both cases the drive is recognized at boot, which brings us back to USBGuard from an earlier log excerpt:
nov 24 20:29:36 fedora-thinkpad gsd-usb-protect[2594]: Failed to fetch USBGuard parameters: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name is not activatable
nov 24 20:29:39 fedora-thinkpad fwupd[3242]: 19:29:39.354 FuEngine failed to add device usb:04:00:02: failed to get static tool info from device: USB error on device 05e3:0610 : Pipe error [-9]
Device 05e3:0610 is an onboard USB hub.
I didn’t have USBGuard installed in my system so I didn’t have a usbguard directory in /etc.
I installed it and reboot, it doesn’t work like before.
DeviceRulesWithPort is set to false.
It doesn’t seem to be a problem of USBGuard, because nothing change with or without it.
I tried again with USBGuard installed and pen drive plugged in, that error is the same

You appear to have some something that expects a properly configured USBGuard on your system. We have no way of knowing what that something is or how it got onto your system. Just installing USBGuard doesn’t fix a broken configuration, so I don’t expect that will allow you to use the USB key. Searching your system for gsd-usb-protect
might provide a useful clue. I think there have been desktop add-ons for Gnome and Qt that use USBGuard – see GNOME to support USBGuard.
I submitted this bug 2251502 and I just discovered that a fix has been submitted as an update (kernel-6.6.3-200) to Fedora 38 and 39.
Thank you for your help.
