Hard to explain this too easily being a non-tech, but back on Mac I hated how the play/pause KB button would apply to whatever was the latest ‘media’ being played. I only wanted to use it to play shuffle from my iTunes library. After a while i looked into it and found an extension, can’t remember name (‘media key forwarder’ or similar). It transformed my life!
From then on, the play/pause button ONLY influenced ONE app (iTunes).
I’d like to know if there’s any way to do the same thing in Fedora Gnome? I’d quite like to tie it to the Shortwave app (SUPERB app btw!), or if not, any particular media player where I can import my music library.
The main bugbear with the default behaviour is that I often have tons of YouTube tabs open, giving instructions or tutorials which I am only half way through. I want to play/pause my music (which I always have running, busy mind can’t work in silence!) constantly, but instead I end up hearing a random tab somewhere has started replaying a YT video and i have to find it, stop it, open Shortwave and click play, for the play/pause KB button to talk to that app again (until next time).
Hopefully that explains it! Is this possible by any chance?
thanks
Have a look if this two extensions are a help for you:
Try the “quick settings audio panel” extension or “[QSTweak] Quick Setting Tweaker” if you want a little little more control.
Both of these give you the option to have the volume mixer show up right there with the master volume so you can easily change the volume of specific applications from the quick settings menu just like how you would normally adjust the volume

But to the content, I tried this QST Extension and it is buggy as hell, not recommended. Maybe use one of the more detailed media player extensions to replace the native media player. It may have a config.
Thanks LS, but I am not looking for any kind of volume level control. I am trying to find a way to make a binary button (keyboard media play/pause button) tied ONLY to one app.
I like that idea. No idea how i’d find out CLI command but in case it’s relevant, Shortwave does have keyboard shortcuts. Which, come to think of it, I will have to try to see if that’s an alternative to using play/pause key. I’ll try it out, thanks!
Ha, not sure what key that is (to toggle playback). If it’s space bar, I already have a custom combo set up for that to do what the windows key does! I guess I could change that to see if the toggle playback combo works to do what I am trying to do!
Duh, I am dumb. No, of course those shortcuts in Shotwave will only work when it’s in focus, I am hoping for a key to play pause Shortwave no matter what app is in focus!
