I’m trying to get Fedora working on my new desktop, and I’ve made it through a few problems, but the system continues to boot incredibly slowly. There’s a delay of over a minute between the time when I choose Fedora from the boot menu and the time when the Fedora logo appears, even though I’m running off an NVME. I’ve reinstalled the OS from scratch, but that doesn’t solve the problem.
I ran systemd-analyze plot > startup.svg as I saw elsewhere and got this result . I’m not an expert, but it seems to be telling me that the problem lies somewhere in my hard disks. The system is running four NVME drives directly on the motherboard, two of them configured for Fedora and two for Windows 11.

Did you use one of the methods to install Windows 11 without TPM2?
On systems where the TPM2 check fails (including the one I’m using now) booting is delayed. Using journalctl --no-hostname -b - g tpm2 should show you if the TPM2 check is failing. Adding systemd.tpm2_wait=false to the kernel command-line disables the check.

I got:
Startup finished in 482ms (kernel) + 7.364s (initrd) + 10.864s (userspace) = 18.711s
graphical.target reached after 10.847s in userspace.
I use NVMe, TPM disabled. I’m not sure what to suggest but firmware probably shouldn’t take 30s+ (I’ve seen 10s worst-case reported but real-world was quicker than that)
I’d mess with BIOS options like IOMMU, above 4G decode, SVM, CSM, and SATA/NVMe controller AHCI vs RAID (it sounds like the BIOS is doing/causing something to take a long time to load, possibly Legacy/CSM-related).
I experimented a bit and turned off TPM, IOMMU, and legacy boot options, none of which made a bit of difference.
Looking at the blame printout, it still looks as though the part that’s eating up the time is initrd and the stuff that is throwing up a bunch of messages has to do with my hard drives, but I’m not sure what to do to fix the problem.
This didn’t happen the first time I installed Fedora. I’m not sure what was different then except that I only had three m2’s installed on the motherboard instead of three.

I don’t think that should cause issues potentially outside of switching the disk drive to a different computer/hardware (the strip/hostonly only builds-in stuff for the computer it’s ran on vs generic-all), and undoing it should be just deleting 99-custom.conf and another --regenerate-all.

Yeah; open Terminal, and copy/paste the first sudo -e line into it. It should open a command-line text editor (likely nano).
Then copy the compress to stdloglvl="0" block and Ctrl + Shift + V (paste as plaintext) into Terminal into the text editor.
Then for nano in the Terminal: Ctrl + X (exit) → Y (yes) → Enter (confirm), then the dracut regen should start and take a minute. Once that’s done reboot.

Should be fine and no difference! It basically takes the file Fedora uses for booting itself and optimizes it, and only affects the Fedora install on the disk drive it’s installed to (doesn’t affect partitions).
Okay, I did just that. Unfortunately it looked like nothing changed: boot times are still over 2 minutes.
Hm, so so far, nothing I’ve done has really helped. I’m a little surprised because the install previously had no issues on the exact same machine. The only changes I can think of that I made are:
adding the fourth m2 drive
updating the BIOS
but I can’t think of a reason why updating the BIOS would increase boot time on Linux but not on Windows (it still boots to Windows just fine). I am by no means an expert, though…
The systemd-analyze output seems to indicate that the hard drives are taking up most of the system’s attention on a new boot, but I’m not really able to meaningfully analyze what the output is telling me. Does anybody have any ideas?

Hi Rand,
I would try removing that 4th m2 drive and see what happens. Maybe even take the machine down to a single NVME with Linux on it just to isolate the drive and possibly the NVME slot. I have a machine with 2x2TB NVME drives and it boots from end of POST to login in about 15 seconds … so what you are experiencing is a bit odd I think.
Well, I gave it a try, and… without the fourth m2 drive, the machine boots just as quickly as I would expect.
Startup finished in 22.041s (firmware) + 4.087s (loader) + 2.740s (kernel) + 1.713s (initrd) + 28.610s (userspace) = 59.192s
graphical.target reached after 28.580s in userspace.

Could anybody compare this to the previous results and give me some idea of just why the fourth drive is causing this result? It wasn’t even the one that Fedora was booting to.

Ok … let’s see if we can isolate the issue to the drive … can you swap on of the other drives out with this one and see what happens? … IF it is following that drive around I would think either the firmware on the drive or the drive has some kind of defect. IF it does not follow the drive, then I would suspect a duplicated disk/partition label or a bad NVME slot.
Okay, so I was going to do this, but I had to put the m2 drive back in its original place to get some files off of it and now it just… works. I don’t know why. It was always working fine in Windows so I don’t see how it could have been a bad connection, but who knows? Maybe it’s a 6.13 thing? Either way, I guess the problem has solved itself.

Yeah, sometimes those SATA connectors don’t go on quite straight… have experienced that as well. But, glad to hear that it is working as expected
