How can I get my XBox 360 Controller working

Hi, I thought an x360 wired controller should be plug and play according to some old forum entries I found, but mine is not recognized on F41.

I know it is not of any help but… my wireless X360 controller works without having to install or set anything on my Fedora 40 installation and still does after the upgrade to Fedora 41.

It may be a hardware problem.
I have an Xbox controller it works with the xpad driver from kernel-modules-extra

@eddy02 The same controller works fine on Windows, but I am trying to ditch it and move to Linux. I may try live-booting other versions/distros to see if they catch anything.

@telin I briefly tried my wireless xone controller, but it seems that getting that to work is even more complicated, with compiling packages, signing kernel modules etc… (or installing kernel level stuff from a random guys 3rd party repo :open_mouth: )
Good to know the 360 version works, may try to get a pre-owned one!

@joe_shm_00 :I just looked at the driver code, it uses pciids to recognize the hardware.
You should see if your hardware is in this list.

If there is no it should certainly be added to the driver source and recompiled it.

Success! Thank you, you pointed me in the right direction! The solution was a simple:

sudo modprobe xpad

…then it started working immediately. Strange I had to do this manually, is there anything I can do to help improve things for others with the same Controller, like filing a bug etc.?

Hi Joe,

You could just add a file in /etc/modprobe.d named xpad with 1 line, xpad.
This tells modprobe to automatically load the module at boot.
