Full resolution using nouveau?

Anyone want to give me a nudge in the right direction to get full resolution using Nouveau? When I use prop-nvidia drivers I’m getting 5120x1440@120 and that is correct, but issues with Sway and what I assume is the prop-nvidia drivers causes other issues.

So I reverted to Nouveau, but then the max resolution I can get is 3840x1080@120, so I just need those last few pixels to show up and I’m all set.

Although vim stopped working for some reason. The command line version. Gvim works fine. Cannot for the life of me figure out why vim stopped working. It just hangs when I run it.

I’d expect limitations with the nouveau driver - not sure if your resolution issues is one of them.

Are you using nvidia drivers from RPMfusion? We have been assuming that if you have the correct rmpfusion driver for your nvidia GPU that you will have a reasonable experience.

Yes, and everything was working fine until I updated to Fedora 44. I have reverted a few times to Fedora 43 and then everything seems to work fine.

The issues I’m experiencing is that Zen browser and Firefox will hang occasionally. Pretty much every time that it requests permissions like webcam or permission to install an addon. But then it will just hang randomly.

Do you see any errors in the user or system journal when this happens?

(I’m not a sway user).

I don’t see any of those when I use firefox as an RPM.
Maybe ask sway folks what is happening?
Also maybe an issue with flatpak permissions?
I’m not knowledgeable on flatpak so cannot advise what to look for.

Sway won’t accept questions about issues related to the proprietary nvidia drivers.

Which nvidia GPU is installed?
When fedora released version 44 the nvidia driver from rpmfusion was also switched from 580 to 595. The nvidia 595 driver dropped support for all nvidia gpus of the maxwell and pascal chipsets (cards 10XX and older).

If you have one of the older GPUs that may cause the affects you are reporting.
lspci -nnk | grep -iA3 vga && modinfo -l nvidia && modinfo -F version nvidia should show the gpu info needed.

You may also add the output of dnf list --installed \*nvidia\*

Rtx 4060, and I’m using a rpm-ostree based distro, so I don’t have dnf. But these are the packages I’ve added.

Is there any difference in the resolution available if you reduce the refresh rate, such as to 60 instead of 120? Maybe the desired 5120x1440 would work at 60 refresh with the nvidia driver.

And no, changing refresh rate doesn’t seem to help.

The nouveau driver is open source, reverse engineered, and does not support the full capabilities of any nvidia gpu (AFAIK). This applies both to resolution and hardware acceleration.

For best performance, especially with the newer 40xx and 50xx gpus, it is necessary to install the latest nvidia drivers. It is recommended to install those drivers from the rpmfusion repos (and for the latest fully functional version they should be installed from the testing repo)
sudo dnf install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-cuda would be the command when using a non-atomic version of fedora, (or the equivalent rpm-ostree command for atomic systems)

Similarly you would get the best performance from upgrading if you already have the driver installed from rpmfusion but do not already have the driver version 595.80 installed.

On my system (fedora Workstation 44) I have this, and all except the firmware package were installed by dependencies when I installed using the command above.
