I’m running Fedora 40 KDE with up-to-date software under a KVM VM, allocated 16384GB memory. Using kmail, proton bridge, firefox. Suddenly the VM hangs and the screen goes black, reporting the display is not working. When I look at it in virtmanager, I see that it is using 15,980 of 16GB. what I’m doing only uses 4GB memory - just the browser and kmail. How can I determine where the memory leak is? Is the OS, the hypervisor, or one of the running applications? See screen shots.

You should be able to ssh into the VM when its in trouble and be able to check logs and run commands to investigate what is going on.

For example run top to see the memory use and what processes are running.

Also have a look at sudo dmesg to you see errors?
I am wondering if the OOM killer ran, in which case what did the OOM killer log in the journal?

You should be able to do a controlled reboot from the ssh session so that you do not lose logs.

I was able to SSH and collected a process listing and dmesg. They are added to the thread. I see memory pressure there. Any indication why?.

it has hung multiple times today. I’m unemployed and job hunting. now kmail isn’t downloading messages from either outlook or proton. something is very wrong here. i’m having to use the browser for my job search from the host computer instead until i figure this out

One time when it hung completely, it sat there for a minute then the screen went black. i could not SSH to it. Then a couple minutes later it displayed the screen again but it was completely unresponsive. at that point, it started responding to ping again, and I was able to SSH in to collect he above information.

From the logs posted what I think is going on is this bug reporter is running gdb and gdb uses lots of memory that triggers oom killer to kill it.

What is not clear is what process crashed to start droonqi going.

Try getting info on the crash using coredumpctl info and add that the bug ticket.
