Fedora 42 is choppy and sluggish

Today I updated from fedora 41 to 42. Stuff has been sort of choppy. It seems that everything kind of freezes and doesn’t respond randomly.

Here’s a video of sort of what I mean: Imgur: The magic of the Internet

You can see that when firefox opens it freezes while loading the web page and then later comes back. Also, I scrolled all the way to the bottom of the page and back up it froze at the bottom and then unfroze when I got near the top causing it to jump. This doesn’t just happen in firefox but that was just and easy way to show it.

I have made sure everything is up to date, and I have the drivers and everything. This didn’t happen in 41, just 42.

Also it looks like wi-fi is not available but bluetooth is. That also used to be fine. But I suppose that is probably a different issue.

Hardware: i5-13600kf, Radeon RX 6600, 64gb Ram

This also happens on plasma and is not exclusive to gnome

Any ideas what’s going on or how to fix it or what I can do?

Have a look a the system and user journals to see if there are error messages around the time of the issues.

You could run sudo journalctl -f and journalctl --user -f in two terminals then start up firefox and see what gets logged.

Also If you boot with the f41 kernel do the issues go away?

journalctl --user -f doesn’t log much in general and nothing is logged there during each freeze.

sudo journalctl -f constantly prints a whole slew of message mostly being from iwlwifi. It is hard to tell if any messages are for sure from the freezes.

I could possible post the log here if that’ll help.

I originally thought this didn’t happen on f41 but it looks like it actually does. When I tried on f41 I didn’t have the most updated kernel version. I have reinstalled a few times in the last day so I no longer have my install I was using for a while but I am fairly sure it was mostly up to date but probably not 6.14.3. So it seems to be a problem with the 6.14.3 kernel.

I tried installing 6.14.4 from here: FEDORA-2025-a8f47ee8b3 — bugfix update for kernel — Fedora Updates System and with that kernel it looks like my issues are fixed

Didn’t fix for me. Another issue is here: Issues after update to F42 with AMD CPU and matches the logs I see
