Since upgrading my Dell XPS 9520 laptop from Fedora 39 to 40 recently I’ve experienced 3 crashes whereas previously the system had been ultra-stable.
Twice I was alt-tabbing and the screen froze. Hitting the Caps Lock key showed that the system was dead.
Just now Chrome became unresponsive, followed by Plasma. I was playing a video in Firefox at the time. Both Chrome and Firefox either died or were killed by the system, and then the screen went black. I could ctrl-alt-F1 thru F7 showing that the system was somewhat alive, but not responding. The ctrl-alt-F3 window contained the following:
<timestamp> systemd[1]: Caught <BUS> from PID <1596563920>.
<timestamp> systemd[1]: Caught <BUS>, core dump failed (child 187002, code=killed, status=7/BUS).
<timestamp> systemd[1]: Freezing execution.
(I had to manually copy that text)
I’m using my laptop pretty much non-stop with many browser windows and tabs from Firefox and Chrome opened simultaneously, most of which are suspended.
Are there known issues with Plasma 6 on Fedora 40 causing similar hangs or crashes? I’m assuming it’s DE related as each time I was doing something with the UI, typically alt-tabbing between programs, or selecting windows from the Plasma taskbar using the mouse.
I’m on the latest Fedora 40 binaries as of about 18 hours ago when I took the opportunity to update after the previous crash. There are currently 9 binaries to update.
