Dummy Output

Well, not a problem but a heads up to everyone about potential cause of ‘Dummy Output’ and no sound on fedora. :smirk:

I have had no prior issues with audio and everything has been working well.

I performed an update recently but did not reboot (it did not do a kernel update and I often wait to reboot with no kernel or driver updates)

When I tried to watch a youtube video I had no audio, and also no audio with MPV.
There were 2 audio outputs listed in gnome settings, one the normal HDMI for my monitor and one “Dummy Output”. The hdmi output was selected but not working.

After mucking around a bit I remembered the update I had performed, then rebooted.
Guess what? :ear: Sound returned along with the built-in audio devices.

Moral of this story –
Reboot after updates even though the kernel may not have been involved. Drivers and other software may have been installed that is different that what was already loaded in the running system and version changes may break things.

Remember to reboot after every update! :upside_down_face:

Another thing you usually get away with but shouldn’t do is updating your system while the full GUI is running. It is recommend to run sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target to shutdown your GUI and then sign in at the console to run dnf update (be sure you’ve saved all your work before running that isolate command ).

TIP: You can use the three-finger salute to reboot your PC from the CLI.

What also can help, is updating the system before going offline, and turn off your system anyway (for users who shut down the system everyday).

While I love to reboot, before switching off my computer totally, I like to know if it boots smoothly. This is with Fedora normal, but you never know
