Can't get wifi hotspot to work

I don’t use wifi but i wanted to try out LocalSend for moving some files from phone to laptop.
I have ethernet connected to laptop. I turned on wifi, and created a hotspot. My phone can’t find it. does it not work if using ethernet?
thanks

lspci and the section with the network adapter please

Also, please add a lot more info about your system, your fedora variant, what hardware, what desktop, what phone, …

Might even add some tags

What might be easier is creating a hotspot on your phone and let the laptop find that one. That is the way I would do it, never done it your way.

Added ethernet, gnome, hotspot, networking, networkmanager, wifi

For LocalSend, both devices need to be on the same network. Having one device as a HotSpot for the other one achieves that - no matter which way around . So yes, it is a solution, in particular if one device is on a LAN which the other device (phone) cannot connect to.

Independent of which same network both devices are on - LocalSend works only if devices are allowed to talk to each other on that network (no “guest WiFi” or such, i.e. no device/AP isolation).

Interesting stuff above thanks!

My setup is simpler than people think.

I have fibre internet to the premises. I don’t use WiFi at all, ever. My laptop uses ethernet to router, my phone uses cellular data only.

To use LocalSend I noticed it needs to be on WiFi and same network. So i thought, since I have ‘free’ high speed internet into my laptop (ethernet), maybe I could make the laptop a hotspot, connect to it (wifi) from phone, and get LocalSend working. That was the idea anyway. But after turning on the hotspot, the phone can’t see it.

Sorry, details:

Fedora 40WS Gnome on Dell 5420
Pixel running GrapheneOS (android)

Sorry yes for this case of course

Added localsend

So, the phone can’t see the hotspot even though WiFi on the phone is on and laptop provides a hotspot via WiFi?

yep. I’ll give it another go in a while as updates have been run recently, but yes there was no wifi detectable by my phone when I posted this thread
