Best way to save data when on a metered connections (mobile hotspot)?

Hello,
not yet on fedora but planning on migrating my laptop to it (2 in one, so trying out GNOME for touchscreen). Any recommendations of tools to use to limit network usage? I’ve got a limited phone plan and only want it to use the network when I explicitly do something (loading a web page, installing packages, etc.), since my experience is mostly with Manjaro on the home desktop I’ve never really had to deal with this😅.

A quick and easy way would be to activate the connection from the quick settings menu only when needed. But you might have something else in mind?

Welcome to :fedora:

I don’t believe the experience would be different. Fedora is not actively doing things on your network unbeknownst to you. So as to the point you made, no there’s nothing to deal with.

Now, I’m interested in know how you came to this conclusion? Why would it be different from Manjaro as it pertains to Networking?

Ah, thanks for the replies

nothing to do with manjaro (sorry if this was misleading). the difference is that I don’t have to deal with limited data at home as compared to a laptop

huh, yeah I guess that would work. my worries are mostly that something will start using the connection whenever possible, though if what hamrheadcorvette said is true then I probably don’t have to worry about that.

Then that would pertain to the software you install and not an issue with the distribution. Also, if you need to explicitly limit the networking in Gnome > Settings > Networking :

You can check the box for metered connections.
