2024-05-22 Council meeting summary

Earlier this morning, the Fedora Council concluded our fortnightly meeting where we had two main topics on discussion for today:

  • #492: New Initiative: Fedora bootc
  • #486: Discuss and decide on a Fedora Council policy on the use of AI-based tooling for contributions

After discussion, we moved the bootc Initiative to a vote where it passed +8/+0/-0. This Initiative is now approved with @jasonbrooks as the Lead and @sumantrom as the Executive Sponsor[1].

We had a more nuanced conversation about how to create guidelines and recommendations to the Fedora community on the use of AI/ML in the project. There seemed to be three different questions that this ticket could address:

  1. Are we talking about including or distributing AI models in Fedora as software packages or some other format?
  2. Are we talking about the scrutiny applied towards contributions by community members that may have used AI tools in their contributions?
  3. Are we talking about the use of AI/ML tools in the creation and production of Fedora Linux?

@amoloney will start meeting next week to design a brief exercise with the Council to figure out which of these three questions (or general directions) we want to prioritize first, so we can get at least some guidance out to our community about how to handle and address these things when they show up in Fedora. They already are.

We intend to bring this exercise to the rest of the Council ideally the week before DevConf CZ to avoid travel scheduling woes.

These are the main highlights! The Meetbot summary is below for reference. Thanks everyone for participating in this week’s meeting. See ya next time!

  1. Sumantro’s seat is currently up for election. His role as executive sponsor is contingent on reelection to the Council. We will determine the right next steps on executive sponsorship once the election cycle ends. ↩︎
