Xorg Multiple Monitors

Here is the problem I am trying to fix and/or configure.

I have two external monitors, and in Gnome/Wayland they work with the third laptop display perfectly using Nouveau. (I have not decoded if I want to use NVIDIA yet).

When I try to use Cinnamon Desktop or Gnome Xorg the external monitors do not work. In Cinnamon no background image displays, my cursor does display.

Is there a setting or package to install to enable Nouveau and get to work in Xorg?

I am using a Geoforce RTX 2060 Mobile card in a System76 laptop.

I have a second video configuration issue but will address that in a different Topic.

I don’t know about Cinnamon, but for Wayland/Xorg the thing you describe is a bit strange (from my limited experience, that is).

I know for sure that you have to configure you monitors separately for Wayland and Xorg (i.e. monitor configuration differs for them), but I think you’ve tried reconfiguring your monitors under Xorg and couldn’t get any result – am I right?

Can you please provide output of xrandr --query both from Wayland session and from Xorg session?

That is correct, I have been unsuccessful in any Xorg configuration. I even setup a new clean user with better results

From what you’ve posted we can see that there are three monitors connected. Wayland doesn’t hint anything about monitors/connections (aside from their resolution and refresh rate), when Xorg names connections according to their type, so I assume:

  • eDP-1 with resolution 1920x1080 and refresh rate 144 Hz is probably your integrated display;
  • DP-1-2 (1920x1200 – 60 Hz) is probably connected through DisplayPort port;
  • HDMI-1-1 (1920x1200 – 60 Hz) – connected thorough HDMI port.

We also see that system knows about one more DisplayPort (DP-1-2) which is disconnected.

So the system sees all three of your monitors (in both Wayland and Xord)… Then what exactly is wrong with them?

  1. How did you do your configuration? Through Gnome Settings, presumably – or did you do something else?

  2. Can you please provide screenshot from Xorg session similar to this:

  3. You monitors are connected and your system sees them – but they don’t behave as they should – am I right? Can you provide more details, please, how exactly then don’t work as you need them to?

So this is interesting. The screenshot shows all three monitors.

However, in reality, the two external monitors are black. I can move my cursor to the external monitor and you can see it, but when I drag an application to an external monitor, they disappear. It is like there is a black overlay on the background.

This sure looks like a bug to me, and I don’t think any additional package can resolve it.

To test it some more you can move some window (even partly) to right monitor and make a new screenshot – chances are high you’ll a screenshot as it all should be.

I think it would be useful to report this bug (against nouveau, I think) – with this screenshot and with photo or videos from a smartphone to show what you do actually see.


Several notes.

  1. I myself now use wayland (on a desktop PC with NVidia GPU and with just one monitor) and generally see no reason to switch to Xorg except for testing sometimes (quite seldom). Your workflow and/or experience may differ dramatically, of course, and what works for me may not work for you. Still maybe consider just using wayland.

  2. This looks like something to do with compositing (though that’s just a guess), maybe you can disable compositing in Gnome on Xorg somehow – though cursory search didn’t produce anything immediately useful on this matter.

  3. I’ve seen mentions that free nouveau driver is kind of hit or miss: it works good on some GPUs but has problems on another.

    But there author reported his system didn’t see external monitors without proprietary drivers (which, again, seemed strange to me). He resolved it by installing proprietary NVidia drivers – which may be a viable approach for you, but there are some caveats, i.e. proprietary driver has it’s own issues. ))

    We’ve discussed proprietary driver’s strong and weak sides several time here on Ask Fedora, I think you can find it easily. I can try to reproduce main points here, but it would be better (I think) if you can find them yourself – as I’m a bit lazy to type it all in again))

    Still it can be a viable solution (or at least you can test if it works better for you).

I did find this:

I testing a little and was able to get the monitors to display, but on logout and back in the black monitors reappear.

I messed around in Gnome Display with the same results.

Since, this install was a migration from Ubuntu 19.04, I am wondering if there are some configuration files from the old install which is creating problems when testing Xorg. I am using my home partition from the previous Ubuntu setup.

The reason why I am testing Xorg is that I have never been real pleased with Gnome Shell and like the traditional workflow of Cinnamon.

One monitor-specific configuration file I know of is:

~/.config/monitors.xml

You can safely delete this file, but you’ll need to configure your monitors anew (as you just did for a new user account). Still it actually is a good idea to try deleting it in your case as various monitor configurations can accumulate there and can potentially confuse your system.

Also take note of the answer for the link you’ve posted, please check if by any chance you can reproduce the behavior answerer reported there (about setting correct frame rate with xrandr).
