Wifi, Internet, tethering, bluetooth NOT WORKING

Hi All, since yesterday, on Fedora 35, I have no opening of web pages, using wifi, Ethernet cable, tethering with Mobile phone / USB cable or Bluetooth. According to the IPS, the router is working fine.
I have a “dual boot” using Fedora 35 / Windows 10 on an ASUS 751J system. The Fedora “System Settings” says the PC is connected to the Internet with WIFI or Ethernet Cable and that the signal strength is good.
When trying to open webpages, I get the message; Server can not be located. This has been both with Firefox and Brave Browsers. On the same computer with Windows 10 everything works as expected.
I almost always run ProtonVPN when on line. I have tried it with and without PROTON VPN.
I also have the same problem with a Dell Inspiron 17R using ubuntu 20.04 LTS. That is the only OS on that PC. All connections from the PC side, say connected, either wifi or Ethernet cable, but no opening of webpages.
I have restarted the router, reset the router, and of course the same with the PC, multiple times.
That the Windows 10 works on the same PC eliminates I believe, hardware problems.
That it concerns both Fedora 35 and ubuntu 20.04 on two separate computers… I wonder if it is a software problem concerning Linux?
I have run the latest updates on both systems before this happened. Using Windows 10 I get Download speeds of up to 60mgb per second with VPN.
I am open to any feedback / suggestions.

Regards,

Magic

We first need some info.
When booted to fedora please post the output of inxi Fzx, ip address, and ip route. Ideally those should be done without the VPN active so we can see what the machine is doing as far as connecting to the internet.
A VPN can introduce different issues so we need the vanilla machine info before we even look at the vpn.

Also, in case this is a dns issue please post the output of ls -ld /etc/resolv.conf and cat /etc/resolv.conf

My bet is on @computersavvy’s guess #2, DNS. While you’re gathering the output he suggests, see if you can ping your router or other known IP address. If so, your wifi/internet/tethering/… is working, and you simply have a DNS configuration issue.
If that’s the case, then you may want to look at the DNS servers configured on your router or Windows system, so that you can get your Fedora system to point to the same ones.

Hi Jeff V
I made some Printscreens (3) from the Fedora 35 Terminal. As there is no internet connection the VPN is also not running.
Concerning inxi Fzx it is also shown in the Printscreen, further down. I also can not install it because of NO INTERNET.
The other items are included in the Printscreens.

I have also contacted ProtonVPN and they said that they know of some issues concerning IPv6 and that they are working on it but I don’t know for sure that the problems are related or not.

It is all a bit complicated, because I have to keep going back and forth between the two OS’s on the same computer. All I can do as far as transferring information is make Printscreens and put them on a memory stick and then send them as attachments.
The Fedora 35 has no access to the internet, but Windows 10 is working okay.

Do let me know what else can be looked at or checked.

Thanks for your concern and help.

Magic

I have sent this to Jeff V;

I asked you to do the tests with VPN disabled but your screen shots show it as active.

The very first step is to get the connection to the internet working without the vpn interfering.

You are getting an IP from the router which shows as 192.168.1.136 on the wifi (wlp3s0) and a default route via the router 192.168.1.1. However that is blocked by the VPN which contrary to what you state does show an active tunnel with an IP address and route in place.

Please log back in to the fedora system, disable the VPN, then repeat the actions. If you then have internet access it will show that the interference is coming from the VPN.

If you are at all familiar with how a VPN functions, it establishes a tunnel from your machine to the remote machine and the IP address and route it starts supercedes your own internet IP config. Once the VPN is established it then relies on access to the internet to be available through the remote host/network. If you did not have internet access the VPN would be unable to make the connection.

With the VPN active it is impossible to confirm that your system is connecting to the internet properly, though the apparently established VPN tunnel implies that it is doing so.

You can confirm that the tunnel is active by pinging the remote end in what appears on the screenshot to be 100.85.0.1. I cannot see an actual IP for the local interface. (pvpnksintrf0)

So weird there is something block your internet connection, because I’ve seen your screen shot, in your SS #3 the vpn network interface still get ip address, this indicating your vpn is still running.
I’ve used protonvpn also, I use in Fedora 35 and Fedora 36 there is no problem even with vpn use protonvpn. See my SS below when protonvpn is enable

and See SS below when protonvpn is disabled. vpn interface tun0 dissappeared from network interface ip addr.

This is very weird because all your network interface is recognize and driver installed and load by linux system. Something prevent in your LAN system to connect internet. But I’m sorry I don’t have sugestion for that. I just noob. Thank you.

How are you even attempting to use the VPN if you do not know how to start and stop it?
Your output of ip route is very different from that just posted by @afiadi , Your vpn tunnel never created the tun0 device and does not display the route correctly.

Again, the very first step is getting the internet working without the VPN. After that has been confirmed then we may be able to work on the VPN issues but STOP the VPN and work on the internet first. The internet has to function properly before the VPN can function properly.

If necessary uninstall proton vpn.

Hi Jeff,
All I have been doing with the VPN is to click on the icon and login. The issue may be that when I am finished with a session on the PC, that I either put in into “lock” mod-us, without turning VPN off.
Then the next time I login in, everything is still available, without the long start-up time from a FRESH start. Sometimes I just close the cover and it goes into SLEEP mode. Then by the next session, I just have to login to Fedora.
I asked you if you could give me the Terminal commands to completely remove the ProtonVPN software, but you didn’t include them in your latest reply. If you don’t know what commands are necessary, then I will contact Proton
and ask them for the entries necessary to remove the software completely. Sometimes I would log out of VPN, but then the next time a fresh Login, but not with every “end of session”.

Thanks for your communication.

I install protonvpn from this link

https://protonvpn.com/support/official-linux-vpn-fedora/

Maybe you can reverse step from those link to remove protonvpn completely.

Hi Jeff, I have managed to completely remove the ProtonVPN.
I have Internet connection again as well. I have informed Proton about this and they are looking into it as well.

If you think that there are tests or controls that can or should be carried out to see if everything with Fedora 35 is working properly,
let me know. I would gladly go through it to satisfy that the system is okay.

Thanks,

Magic

Good.
Following that step shows this is not a system issue nor an internet issue but that it is purely an issue with the way protonvpn was installed and not properly functioning.

I don’t use protonvpn, but if you follow the instructions given by @afiadi it seems likely that you should be able to install it and use it properly.

Hi Jeff, I did use the official Proton indŝtructions to install it. It worked fine for months with no problems.
It only started acting funny a few days ago.
Also Proton said that they were having issues with IPv6 and that they are working on it.
Maybe that’s why it affected both Fedora and ubuntu, even though they are on different machines.
I have asked Proton to keep me informed as to when the problem would be taken care of and then I will reinstall it again.
Thanks for your concern and interest in supporting me with this.

Take care and stay healthy,

Magic

Hi Jeff, I have restored the Internet connection also on the PC with ubuntu 20.04 LTS.
There were a couple of proton things that I missed by doing the uninstall.
After removing them the System is working.
I will still wait to hear from Proton (concerning the fix that they are working on) before re-installing either the ubuntu or the Fedora versions.

Again thanks for your support.

Best regards,

Magic

If the issue with proton is IPv6 and you do not absolutely need IPv6 then it is possible to disable IPv6 on the machine. You could then reinstall proton and avoid those particular problems.
