Tainted Kernel

Hi,

I am experiencing a lot of system instability lately but when I look at the crash reporter it says it can’t report because of a tainted kernel (POE).

I have an Nvidia GTX 4090 and have installed support for it, is there any way I can figure out the root cause of the problems, or a way to temporalily disable Nvidia to see if it is the cause of the problems.

Your kernel is likely to be tainted because of nvidia drivers. If you installed proprietary nvidia drivers, this taints the kernel. However, there can be further taints, and unlike nvidia, they could be not intended by you. Yet, unless there is explicit indication, I would not anticipate that the tainted kernel is related to your problem - but this has to be differentiated from the possibility that the nvidia driver itself can be part of the problem (it can be part of the problem whereas its taint is intended by you when you use proprietary drivers).

I have no time to help at the moment, but if you want to attract another supporter, you should change the title to roughly describe your very problem rather than “tainted kernel” (which is not necessarily related to your problem anyway).

Also, elaborate what you mean with “instability”. And you might add some logs. E.g., sudo journalctl --no-hostname . Feel free to further anonymize the logs if you want.

The more elaboration of your problem and related logs you provide, the higher is the chance that someone comes to the conclusion that they can help and thus answer.

By this, we need details as to what ‘support’ was installed.
Please post the output of dnf list installed \*nvidia\* and inxi -Fzxx

We also need details as to what you are calling ‘instability’.

System fail of gnome making me logout to recover. Lots of craashing of Firefox when playing you tube. File system go to read only after suspend

What is happening?
When?

Often within minutes of restart so getting between 15 mins and 1 hour of use between reboots.

What are you doing at that time?

Typically i have several browser windows open. Also php-storm and several running symfony server processes running and a container running mysql, github desktop

just had firefox fail while penning this response (LOL) I think thr youtube ads are trigging crash on that.

Is this a newly installed drive? Has it worked well in the past? Did it come with a big heatsink?

Large nvme drives may overheat in systems with marginal cooling. Your description of the issue (random failiures in use, drive mounted read-only on reboot) is typical of overheating. Check the status of the drive using Gnome Disks or smartmontools. Some conditions (old-age, overheating) will result in SSD drives switching to read-only mode. If the drive has overheated, you may be able to improve cooling or switch to a drive that produces less heat.

A normal startup runs fsck:

You may find fsckerrors in an earlier boot.

The drive is very new. It is mounted with the motherboard Heatsink (Asus Strix x670)

Gnome disks doesn’t flag any issues nor does a review of journalctl

loaded smnartmontools and gsmartControl but they ID borth of my NVME drives as unknown model

I have pulled the NVME drive and put the original heatsink back on which means i loose the 2nd NVME slot, the heat sink on the motherboard was beefy but lets see.

I also added a case fan but its on the opposite side of the case so may not have any effect.

Is there a way to get the live nvme temps so i can monitor it ?

lm_sensors may provide the temps for some drives

It looks like putting the OE heatsink has remedied the problem Crucial T700
