Some news from the JDLL 2024 at Lyon

I attended to the JDLL 2024 (Open source software days 2024) at Lyon, to present Linux and music softwares.

A lot of people and a lot of interesting discussions.

A view of Cardinal, a packaged version of VCV Rack modular synthesizer.

Ray Session, a great tool to manage Jack Audio sessions. It records all the applications launched and the connexions made and restart everything for you. It saves me a lot of time.

Cardinal modular synthesizer in action. Here, I used an electro-acoustic Kalimba which was connected to a sound card. The sound of the Kalimba went through the tuner of rakarrack-plus which then outputs the MIDI value of the sound played by the Kalimba. The MIDI note controlled the SurgeXT synth hosted in Carla-rack. The output of Carla-rack went then to Cardinal through 2 modules:

  • an echo with 3 seconds of delay and 80% of feedback
  • the Plateau reverb

Everything was performed by the standard Fedora kernel en preempt mode (preempt=full threadirqs as option at boot time). I was still on Fedora 38 during the JDLL but I planned to switch to 40 soon.
