Here’s the Objective Revamp update for the Fedora Websites and Apps Team - encompassing the things that we have been up to and the things that we plan to do in the coming times.

Fedora Websites and Apps Objective Revamp Update 2022

Our websites have been our face of representation to the world of Fedora Linux users and community contributors alike. So much so that their state is determinant of the overall popularity, downloads and convenience among the aforementioned to a great extent. We started off some months ago with a successful objective proposal to put the time and effort into revamping not just the websites and applications that we maintain, but the way the community around it is organized.

Status

Allow me to share with you the things that we have been up to so far.

Fedora Websites Revamp Stakeholders Team

PoC: Pawel Zelawski and Timothee Ravier

The team looks into designing aesthetics, making the style guide, planning the website strategy and deciding the tech stack for delivering Fedora Linux offerings website.

  1. Multiple contributors from Design team, Server WG, Workstation WG, Kinoite subteam, Fedora Infra subteam, NeuroFedora SIG etc. have been participating in discussions over at the Fedora Websites Revamp chat.
  2. Members from the design team have been continually instrumental in coming up with various mockups and improving upon them by getting reviews from within the team and the outer community (Discussion fp.o)
  3. Design team representative, Mairin Duffy had been mentoring a set of interns, Emma Kidney and Jess Chitas as well with her endeavours of creating mockups for the Fedora Linux websites.
  4. Planning and updates are now recorded in a GitLab subgroup - the creation of which was pursued by the members of this team, contributors from Fedora Infra and those from the Community Platform Engineering team.
  5. Meetings have been organized by Pawel Zelawski and participated by the members every after a certain period of time to catch up on the progress, perform stakeholder reviews and plan on the next tasks.
  6. With active representation in the events like Nest With Fedora and Fedora Linux Release Parties, the team had been reaching out to garner more feedback on the work done so far and acquire contributors for assistance.

Fedora Websites and Apps Engineering Team

PoC: Francois Andrieu and Onuralp Sezer

The team takes care maintenance and development of websites and applications while constantly keeping up with UI/UX reviews, mentoring contributors and organizing meetings.

  1. Multiple contributors from Design team, Fedora Infra, Red Hat’s Open Source Program Office and Community Platform Engineering team etc. have been participating in discussions over at the Fedora Websites and Apps Team chat.
  2. Websites have been maintained in their current state and operations on translations/content/verification are continually performed while keeping up with the relevant release cycle of Fedora Linux.
  3. Contributor onboarding and retention, active communication with the outer community on Discussion fp.o. regarding planning topics and retrospective feedback on tasks have been actively peformed.
  4. Members, Akashdeep Dhar and Francois Andrieu have been instrumental in mentoring an intern, Subhangi Choudhary to revamp the web application used for aggregating IRC meeting logs and summaries.
  5. Members, Michael Scherer and Onuralp Sezer have been instrumental in mentoring an intern, Ojong Enow to assist with maintaining a certain set of websites and rebooting the websites/apps index.
  6. With active representation in the events like Nest With Fedora and Fedora Linux Release Parties, the team had been reaching out to garner more feedback on the work done so far and acquire contributors for assistance.

Fedora Websites and Apps Team Objective Co-leads

PoC: Marie Nordin and Justin Flory

The team works to reboot the websites and apps team in its organizational and operational aspects, enrich contributors experiences/cohesion and delivering objective goals.

  1. FPL and FCAIC, and multiple contributors from Commops team, Program Management Team and Red Hat’s Community Platform Engineering team have been participating in the discussions over at Fedora Websites and Apps Objective chat.
  2. Members have been actively introspecting the resources made available to the teams, activities to be performed, outputs of the tasks, outcomes of the objective and finally, the impact it has been making.
  3. Keeping up with the updates delivered by Akashdeep Dhar as a conduit from the engineering and revamp team, the team shapes and revises the objective requirements and goals to better suit the current state.
  4. Inventory of the current set of websites and applications under the remit of multiple teams has been maintained by Graham White in collaboration with people from the Design team and Fedora Infra team.
  5. To avoid overlap of roles among multiple subteams and to better describe the division of tasks, an infographic had been designed by Marie Nordin and reviewed by the other subteams for consistency.
  6. With active representation in the events like Nest With Fedora and Fedora Linux Release Parties, the team had been reaching out to garner more feedback on the work done so far and acquire contributors for assistance.

Plans

Now that you know about things that we have been doing until now, let me talk a bit about the things we plan for the coming times.

Fedora Websites Revamp Stakeholders Team

  • The team would continue organizing periodic meetings to review the mockups created by the design team, planning on the technical stack of implementation and analyzing stakeholders’ requirements.
  • While maintaining highest possible visibility during planning, the team would attempt to ensure that all suggestions and reviews both, from within the team and outside, are taken into account.

Fedora Websites and Apps Engineering Team

  • The team would continue developing the applications, maintaining the sites and revising them while keeping up with the release cycles of Fedora Linux while regularly conducting meetings.
  • While ensuring quickest possible responses to issues, the team would attempt to onboard new contributors, retain them with mentoring endeavours and share updates on the technical tasks.

Fedora Websites and Apps Team Objective Co-leads

  • The team would continue implementing the objective tasks and help achieve objective outcomes that move the team towards the goal with project management practices and analyzing team status.
  • While focussing on the teams’ needs and focusses, the team would try to ensure that the contributors feel rewarded, the ease of finding beginners tasks and mentorship is duly provided.

The blog needs more work so pushed it for weekend to work on
It needs featured image, readability improvement, and small updates around a few places
I will do it when I have a little more time on hand – and hopefully this will be scheduled for Tuesday
