So, I am on Fedora KDE 41.
Because of a careless command, I wiped all my non-hidden files in my home directory. Upon using a browser and downloading a file, “Downloads” folder was created. Then somehow, Templates and a few other folders were automatically created as well. However, I had to create “Documents”, “Pictures”, “Music” and “Videos” folders myself and give them their corresponding icons.
I don’t know why this bugs me so much, but upon changing their icons, there is a .directory file created there. I understand what it does. However, this file is missing for the folders like “Downloads” and “Templates” that were created automatically. Does it make any difference in practice?
Suppose I wanted to make those manually-created folders behave like those automatically created ones, what should I do to make them have their icons without .directory file?
The hidden .directory has the display configuration of that particular folder (be it Downloads, Documents, Desktop, etc). If you have the option to keep individual folders with their own view properties enabled in Dolphin that hidden folder gets created for every folder. The Downloads and Templates folders probably don’t have any view properties set yet (since they were created automatically). Change something inside the folder and the .directory should pop up.
Thank you. I do understand what those files are for. What I mean is that, when Pictures, Videos and Music files were created automatically, they didn’t probably have .directory folder, right? Can I with recreate them with a terminal so they have their own icons without .directory file?
I figured it out: I made sure that my user-dirs.dirs in the .config folder looks like this:
