Podman reports error with Docker registry while pulling mariadb

I am trying to install mariadb/server from Podman as instructed here. But I keep running into the following error:

username $ podman pull mariadb/server
✔ registry.fedoraproject.org/mariadb/server:latest
Trying to pull registry.fedoraproject.org/mariadb/server:latest...
Error: initializing source docker://registry.fedoraproject.org/mariadb/server:latest: reading manifest latest in registry.fedoraproject.org/mariadb/server: manifest unknown
username $

I do have Docker installed, but I am absolutely certain that the daemon is not running:

username $ sudo docker ps
[sudo] password for username:
Cannot connect to the Docker daemon at unix:///var/run/docker.sock. Is the docker daemon running?
username $

Surely, Docker is not needed for Podman, is it?

Thanks in advance for your help.

It is not needed. Podman is doing what docker does (more or less).

To succeed you can use:

podman pull docker.io/library/mariadb

podman network create --driver bridge maria-bridge
podman run --network=maria-bridge --name some-mariadb -e \
      MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=my-secret-pw -d mariadb:latest
podman run -it --network maria-bridge \
   -e MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD="my-secret-pw" \
   --rm mariadb sh \
   -c 'exec mariadb -h some-mariadb -P3306 -uroot -p"$MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD"'

See logs:

podman logs some-mariadb

Access bash shell in container:

podman exec -it some-mariadb bash

Docker - MariaDB (Just exchange docker with podman or create an alias docker who points to podman)
