Nvidia GPU and Reboot/Shutdown Issue

Currently I’m facing 2 issues with my fedora 43 install upgraded from 42-

  1. Nvidia GPU - GTX 1650 mobile is no longer working
  2. OS often freezes during reboot/shutdown, always need to do force shutdown with power button

I’m not sure if both issues are related or not, I had no such issues on 42 release.
Please let me know how to fix this and I’m happy to provide additional details if required.

I believe that those two things are probably separate issues. And interestingly enough, I used to get hangs at shutdown when I was on 42 and now that I am on 43 it is no longer happening for me. Also I am using the MATE spin and not GNOME. Doing a quick Google search for “Fedora hangs at shutdown” did bring up quite a few hits. One that was solved was someone who was also on an Intel platform. Don’t know if it is related to your particular thing that is going on. I also am not sure if you can get any information out of the system while it is in the shutdown process…

Really just taking a shot in the dark here. Have you also tried booting to a previous kernel to see if the issue persists?

I must admit I didn’t research for shutdown/reboot issue at all but your shared article helped a ton in resolving my issue.

I went through the article and it talked about disabling TPM which I remembered I disabled a long time ago. Still as a hunch, I checked my BIOS and I see TPM is enabled somehow.
I disabled TPM and tried to check if shutdown issue is gone but it was still there.

I went back again in BIOS to double check if TPM is disabled which it was but I saw Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) enabled as well so I disabled that as well to see if it helps. Lo behold my reboot/shutdown issues are gone. I tried rebooting 3 times in succession and it worked as expected.

For gpu issue, reinstalling drivers fixed this as well, probably affected by forced shutdowns

TLDR - disabled Intel Software Guard Extensions (Intel SGX) to solve shutdown/reboot issue in Fedora 43

UPDATE: Spoke too soon, shutdown issue is still there

Well that sucks. When I had a similar issue in the past it would just happen at random times. And then it just finally went away. So I don’t know if it was a kernel issue or what. Maybe fill out a bug report over at Bugzilla. Best of luck getting it all straightened out.

Try reviewing the previous log around the timestamp after you issued the shutdown command. You might see what’s getting stuck.

@yurislnx I thought doing same and got some commands from chatgpt to run but didn’t find anything that was shouting error, would be helpful if I can know where to get exact logs for shutdown events

Find the boot log you’re interested in by listing them first: journalctl --list-boots
Then load the boot log where you saw the issue, e.g. journalctl -b -2 (replace the 2 based on the first command’s results.)

Regarding your other issue, the GPU seems to have failed to communicate with the system right after the driver was loaded:

Not sure what caused this in your case.

I would double check that your BIOS/firmware is up to date. Sometimes that can fix weird hardware behaviour.
