Monitor only 640x480 resolution

It’s a Minisforum UM480 XT with an integrated GPU, so I assume HDMI is plugged into motherboard. It’s been working OK with this monitor for 18 months.

Are you having to use Gnome?
You could install KDE Plasma or Sway WM alongside Gnome or boot one of them from a live USB to test is new resolutions show up.

If you are running in X, this post detailing CVT and xrandr new mode might work… https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=383776

Other thing to try is reinstalling AMDGPU drivers.

I would personally install Sway next to Gnome (also a great time to spruke the wonderful Sway!) and boot into that (from terminal if your login manager does not like it). Then we can tell for sure that it is a problem with your current Gnome Desktop, or something deeper like an AMDGPU issue.
Sway is very light-weight, so not much to download or remove if you dont like / need it.

You could try booting up the KDE plasma live install USB and seeing if the monitor works.
No need to do the actual install.

The advantage of installing KDE or Sway on the current install is that we can see if the drivers are broken.

On a live USB, it will run an entirely new system. So I would do that if the current system with Sway or KDE does not give more resolutions.

And the advantage of the live USB is that is does not depend on what is currently installed.

Take your pick on what you think will help.

Before all of that, @hockcau , have you ran VKcube?

I ran goverlay but I could only see the top half of the window and couldn’t scroll down, perhaps because of the because of the 640x480 resolution?

Yeah, most probably.

Really bothersome stuff.

What about VKcube? Did it even launch?

I just re-read some stuff above to refresh my memory (should have done that from the beginning, honestly):

You seem to not have a problem with the main machine (which has a mobile Ryzen CPU) because it can change resolutions with a different display.

Monitor-X doesn’t work well, but TV-Y does.

Are you able to connect multiple external displays to the same machine at the same time?
Rather than answering that, first: what machine are you using? Knowing the model will help.

It’s a Minisforum UM480 XT

Yes the iiyama ProLite B2480HS monitor was working until recent updates.
When I hook-up an old LCD TV I get a full range of resolutions to choose.

I think I did try reinstalling AMDGPU drivers, but will have another go
I’m away for the UK bank holiday.
I’ll try Sway and booting up live install USB when I am back after the weekend.
Thanks all

Hi @hockcau did you try to disconnect the power cable of your monitor for a few seconds and then connect it again? Sometimes the firmware of some monitors may go crazy and the only solution is doing such power cycling.

The amdgpu drivers are part of the kernel.
But make sure you have the firmware.
If you think you have corrupt/damaged files then I would do a rpm verify rather then a reinstall.

Linux Disk Images tend to be bootable from the USB.

Either using the version of Fedora you chose, or using Fedora KDE, try to boot the PC from the USB.
That way you’ll see if the “default stock Disk Image” of the Distro works with that monitor.

I’ve attempted “power cycling” several times with no success

amdgpu drivers appeared to pass the rpm verify test, wth no output with:

$ rpm -V xorg-x11-drv-amdgpu.x86_64

For completeness sake I also tried rpm verify for the rpms that seemed to relate to the kernel, but I don’t know if they are relevant. The only one which had some output was

$ rpm -V kernel-modules-core.x86_64
missing     /lib/modules/6.15.9-101.fc41.x86_64/build
missing     /lib/modules/6.15.9-101.fc41.x86_64/source

Note, this is a f42 install

Also make sure you have these are they are up to date.

amd-gpu-firmware-20250808-1.fc42.noarch
amd-ucode-firmware-20250808-1.fc42.noarch

It all appears to be in order

$ dnf list installed amd-gpu-firmware
Updating and loading repositories:
Repositories loaded.
Installed packages
amd-gpu-firmware.noarch 20250808-1.fc42 updates
$ dnf list installed amd-ucode-firmware
Updating and loading repositories:
Repositories loaded.
Installed packages
amd-ucode-firmware.noarch 20250808-1.fc42 updates

Then its back to the monitor being the issue.

Although why would it suddenly be an issue with this specific monitor whist it’s been OK from Fedora 39 to 41, for 18 months.

I’ll see if I can get another monitor from work.
