Mentor/Mentee Lunch Matching @ Fedora Mentor Summit - Flock To Fedora 2025

Introduction

In Fedora Project, we believe that “everyone can be a mentee and a mentor”. Fedora Mentor Summit is a satellite event at Flock To Fedora organized to foster the practice of mentorship within the Fedora Project community. To celebrate the contributions of mentors and provide the opportunities to mentees, we have been coalescing the event with Flock To Fedora (by 2025, third time now :tada:).

Flock To Fedora is all about contributors coming together - sharing ideas, collaborating thoughts and building connections in the community. As a part of the Fedora Mentor Summit 2025, we are organizing a Mentor/Mentee Lunch Matching session. Participants can get the chance to share delicious meals and interesting stories while connecting with the mentors and mentees of the community.

How it works

  • Comment below to express your interest

  • Add your interested role (mentor or mentee) and your topics of interest for matching

  • Deadline: 2025-05-16T00:00:00Z

  • Share your Matrix ID so that we can communicate preferences

What will happen

  • We will create matching of mentors and mentees based on your topics of interest

  • Matching can be changed among if informed well in advance

  • Change of roles may happen depending on the matching of mentors and mentees

  • Sharing and gathering of experiences is encouraged with other participants over at the table

  • We have created a simple guideline to support your lunch conversation

Why join in

In the spirit of Fedora’s “Friends” foundation, the Mentor/Mentee Lunch Matching is a great way to meet people, share ideas, and learn over a relaxing meal. Whether you’re hoping to find a mentor to learn from or inspire someone who’s just starting out - you can make meaningful connections here. Plus, if you snap a group selfie during the lunch, you’ll earn a Fedora Badge as a fun keepsake from the event!

FAQs :red_question_mark:

  1. Do attendees have to be present in-person at the event to participate? :round_pushpin:
As the event will take place with participants sharing meals, this event is exclusive to in-person participants of Flock To Fedora 2025 only.

  2. When is this event going to be organized and at which location? :timer_clock:
This event is preliminarily planned for the first day of Flock To Fedora 2025 and is going to be organized in the same venue as Flock To Fedora 2025.

  3. Which interest areas and relevant topics can be included in discussions? :bar_chart:
Regardless of which subproject or SIG the participants may contribute to, all areas and topics are welcome with relation to Fedora Project.

  4. Can I be assigned with one more friend or colleague in the same match? :busts_in_silhouette:
As the goal of this event is to make potential mentor/mentee matches, it will be for the best if participants are open to new connections.

  5. Can someone participate as both a mentor and a mentee? :teacher:
There is always something to learn and something to teach at all ends so that is totally possible for the participants to be mentor and mentee.

  6. Who can I reach out to, if I need more information on this? :information_source:
Please feel free to reach out to me on #t0xic0der:fedora.im, @echevemaster and @jonatoni on #jonatoni:fedora.im for more information.

@theprogram yes, we’re planning to include all of those areas - programming, packaging, infrastructure, community, DEI, marketing, etc - anyone is welcome to join.

At the moment, we’re aiming to host it during lunch on the first day of the event, but if there’s a lot of interest, we might extend it to additional days.

Thanks so much for joining us :tada:

I can be a mentor for people who want to know more about infrastructure or programming in python. I’m open to talk about anything else as well.

As a mentee I would be glad to learn more about atomic editions of Fedora or flatpaks in Fedora.

I’m interested to be a mentee. I already have some basic understanding of the Fedora image mode systems in general and would like to gain more in-depth knowledge. I would like to learn more about Python, Go, Rust, RPM/Flatpak packaging, Release Engineering, Testing, Infrastructure, etc. Overall, as already mentioned in this topic, I would be glad to meet people I would like to talk to.

I would like to sign up as a mentee to better understand any of the following topics:

  • Working with diverse stakeholders (in an open source project context): Communication, strategy,
  • bootc: I have not had time to get to know bootc better. I’d like to understand the foundational technology, how an operating system is defined for bootc, and maybe going through some examples of how these images are built.
  • Konflux: I have spent little time on understanding the change in the packaging workflow from the traditional RPM + Koji workflow. I am already a packager with a few packages to my name. I’d like to know what I might expect in the far-along future, preferably someone who is familiar with RPM packaging and Konflux.

I’m interested in joining as a mentee. I’m mostly comfortable with the technical side of (still have a lot more to learn), but not so much when it comes to communication, community involvement, or handling things outside of code. would love to get some guidance on that!

also any advice on growing and building career in open source would be really appreciated and I would love to hear about your experiences too!
