This discussion ended as many others do, with no real solution except “use Windows”.
I’ve run into the same problem, or at least similar, it has to do with h.265 videos but I’m not so fussed about Totem (Gnome Videos) not being able to play the video, but the thumbnails, because if Totem can’t play the video it also can’t generate the thumbnail for it.
