Google Summer of Code is a summer program aiming to bring more developers into open source software development. It enables interns to spend their summer working with open source organizations on projects proposed by participating organizations and supported by mentors.
Fedora used to participate in Google Summer of Code as a mentoring organization consistently in the past. We would love to bring that back! We are happy to announce that we are applying as an organization again.
Understanding the process
As an organization Fedora needs to propose projects led by mentors to GSoC to be accepted. Once the organization and projects are accepted, the application period for interns will open. So if you are an intern, stay tuned!
Why should you propose a project and be a mentor?
One the main goals of Fedora Strategy 2028 is to growth in number of contributors. Mentoring fits perfectly here as it is a very good opportunity for new and existing contributors to improve their skills, get closer to Fedora community and get paid!
In addition, as a mentor you can learn a lot! When explaining a concept to someone new you need to think about it thoroughly leveraging your understanding of the concepts to be rock solid. The intern might have insecurities or other issues that you might need to deal with improving you people management skills!
On this journey you wonβt be alone. Fedora mentored project coordinators will be there to help you navigate the challenges you might face.
How to apply as a mentor or project to Fedora in GSoC?
The CFP for projects and mentors is now open! To propose a new project as a mentor you will need to create a new issue in the Fedora Mentoring home. Make sure to provide all the needed information so the project can be evaluated properly.
- Title of the project
- Description
- Skills needed
- Documentation related to the project
- Deliverables
- Estimate/expected planning per week (12 weeks total)
Once you create the new issue, make sure to monitor it as the coordinators might ask you for more information or to clarify some aspects.
Important dates
The official application period for organizations on GSoC starts January 27th and ends February 11th. As we need some extra buffering time in case we have any issue with the application the period for CFP for Fedora projects and mentors closes February 3rd. Make sure you have proposed your project by then.
