Obsolete cockpit-navigator for cockpit-files due to the availability of a modern, maintained file system browser for Cockpit.

:link: Detailed Description

Last year the Cockpit project released a new officially supported Cockpit Files plugin intended to provide a modern alternative to the existing Cockpit navigator plugin. The latest release (14) supports everything which Cockpit navigator did except the creation of symlinks which is planned to be implemented.

When upgrading to Fedora 42, systems with cockpit-navigator installed will be switched to cockpit-files.

:link: How To Test

cockpit-files is available in Fedora 40 and higher.

:link: User Experience

Replacing cockpit-navigator with cockpit-files leads to a visual change within Cockpit the Navigator menu entry will be replaced with a new File browser menu entry under Tools.

The UI of cockpit-files is different from cockpit-navigator but offers the same functionality with the exception symlink creation. cockpit-files like Cockpit uses PatternFly as UI toolkit making the user experience more consistent.

How do you feel about the proposal as written?

  • Strongly in favor
  • In favor, with reservations
  • Neutral
  • Opposed, but could be convinced
  • Strongly opposed
0 voters

If you are in favor but have reservations, or are opposed but something could change your mind, please explain in a reply.

We want everyone to be heard, but many posts repeating the same thing actually makes that harder. If you have something new to say, please say it. If, instead, you find someone has already covered what you’d like to express, please simply give that post a  instead of reiterating. You can even do this by email, by replying with the heart emoji or just “+1”. This will make long topics easier to follow.

Please note that this is an advisory “straw poll” meant to gauge sentiment. It isn’t a vote or a scientific survey. See About the Change Proposals category for more about the Change Process and moderation policy.

Speaking as the maintainer of Cockpit Navigator: Let’s do this!

(Also, if you want to list me as a co-owner of this Change, I’m happy to get involved here.)
