Debugging a weird mouse issue

Recently I’ve encountered a weird bug where sometimes my mouse randomly just completely stops working, I can still move the pointer, but it doesn’t respond to hovering over anything and clicking does nothing. And not like, it only happens with a specific mouse either, but mouse input in general. I’ve tested it with two touchpads, one bluetooth mouse and the USB dongle from that bluetooth mouse.

I’ve tried debugging it with sudo libinput debug-events and there I can see my mouse input actually happening and that’s about as far as I got with debugging it because I don’t really know what else to try.

Sometimes a weird possibly unrelated variation of this bug occurs where I can click, but only on one specific window no matter whether it’s the focused one or not, and if it’s not focused it becomes the focused window, preventing me from clicking on anything else.

The bug also persists in the Alt+Tab screen so I doubt it’s a single invisible window capturing all the input or whatever, but I really have no idea what it might be.

What desktop are you on?

Run journalctl and have a look fof anything out of the ordinary.

I’m on Plasma.

Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll look at journalctl if the bug happens again. Although weirdly enough it hasn’t happened for a while now.

So the bug happened again, and I took a look at journalctl -xe and I don’t really see anything that looks too suspicious.

You can post the output here, usually journal ctl shows USB disconnect for mouse problems - but your issue sound differentvan the cursor works but the burtons dont.
I’ve never seen this before.

What desktop are you on? Gnome? Plasma?

I’m on Plasma, latest I think. And yeah, no USB disconnects.
