Constant mouse freezing after latest update

Hi all!

Today there were some updates (see below) which I installed using “sudo dnf update --refresh”.
After I rebooted, my mouse constantly freezes for ~0.5 second in few seconds intervals. I could say the system freezes, but hard to notice. I just noticed Firefox while scrolling to freeze, but it could be the mouse not working.

Since it is very annoying, I restored to a previous state using Timeshift and the problem was solved. After I was 100% sure that it is not happening, I re-installed the updates, and unfortunately it came back, so it is definitely something from the update.

EDIT: Just after I posted this, system froze for ~10 seconds! I ever tried the keyboard and wasn’t responding

Try booting the previous kernel. Does the problem go away?

Do you have another system you can use to ssh into the troubled one?
Or can you get to a console with Ctrl-Alt-F3?

If so run tools to see what is happening on the system.
1. sudo dmesg - any recent errors from the kernel?
2. top - any process using high cpu?

this is prob bluetooth issue i had this multiple times on KDE bluetooth keeps restarting if using bluetooth mouse/keyboard

Other option could be that cable is connected in low power usb if there is usb 3+ ports open could try to switch

Nothing shady… Except that “Isolated Web Co” which I am not sure what it is, and reached 70% at some point, but without freezing the mouse.
When the mouse froze, the higher app was plasmashell with 7%.

i see that usb hub/usb keeps reseting connections

Ok, I see the USB power error, but I booted to this version, and it works fine.
While the top one, appeared after the update, causes the issue.

Are all the USB devices plugged in to the motherboard or do you have port expander hubs? If its a USB hub is it powered?

If no to the above I’d suggest you report as a kernel bug to fedora bug tracker.

I do have USB hubs and a KVM that I use, where my mouse/keyb are connected.
Since I work with two PC’s at the same time, I cannot remove it.
However, as I said, doesn’t happen with 6.10.7-200 version.

Try comparing the output of lsusb -v when booted under each kernel.
Do you see a difference in the bHubContrCurrent values?
I’m wondering if the kernel is getting the current calculation wrong?

I am guessing that this may be related to the very new GPU and using the nouveau driver instead of the nvidia driver.

Possibly installing the nvidia driver from rpmfusion would solve this issue.
https://rpmfusion.org/Howto/NVIDIA

Then, this is the issue, as I had the same with other distros as well.

However NVidia should not load nouveau driver, since it is blacklisted and should use vfio-pci instead.

Didn’t test my VMs with this kernel, but I am 100% sure, they wont work.

Is that a bug, or the way vfio is implemented has changed?

Turns out that GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX for Kernel 6.10.8, is missing all the custom parameters I added for 6.10.7.

Is this a bug in the update script, or I need to manually add them again and rebuild grub2 ?

grub copies the options when you install a new kernel.

How did you set the options?

I use the grubby --update-kernel=ALL --args=xxx to add args (and --remove-args to remove them).

I usually edit manually my config:

sudo nano /etc/default/grub

And then I rebuild initfrms:

sudo grub2-mkconfig -o /etc/grub2-efi.cfg

Is that the wrong way?

Your way of doing the update has always worked for me in the past.

I just tested changes to /etc/default/grub and ran grub2-mkdonfig and the changes do appear in /etc/kernel/cmdline.

I have tested the command given by Barry above and it does update that file as well as all other changes performed by manually updating /etc/default/grub and running grub2-mkconfig. After using grubby and rebooting the changes should appear in /proc/cmdline.

Using grubby is simpler for me since you do not have to enter the path for the output file.

Turns out, the changes were copied to the command line, but were ignored.

I just booted after some more updates, and now it works. It seems there was a bug, and was fixed.
