Call for Projects and Mentors for the upcoming round of Outreachy

Continuing the discussion from Call for Projects and Mentors for Outreachy December '22 - March '23 cohort:

Hi Fedora Friends,

Reminder that we are currently looking for projects for the upcoming round of Outreachy. The projects can be for any Fedora related sub-project, team, or thing that is going on in Fedora (coding & non-coding alike!). Mentorship is a great opportunity to:

  • Introduce others into the Fedora community
  • Make your sub-project more sustainable
  • Accomplish that thing you never seem to get to
  • Enhance your career/professional skills
  • Foster diversity and a culture of mentorship in Fedora
  • Spread the love of open source!

Outreachy has extended the project deadline to next Friday Sept. 23, 2022 at 4pm UTC, but we ask that you submit your project idea to the Mentored Projects repo as soon as possible. The Mentored Projects team will review and help you refine your proposal before submission. Hope to see your project ideas :tada:

If you have questions, make sure to check out the original blog post and/or comment here.

Cheers!

Looks like not much response – it’d be a shame to miss out on this round!

Hey folks! As I understand it currently, it looks like we will run one mentored project this upcoming round. I am coming on board as an Outreachy coordinator for Fedora in the upcoming round. I am happy to help out and be a point of contact for all things Outreachy this round!

sadly it appears I missed this round although I would appreciate consideration for the next one.

I got the usual Outreachy e-mail about the next (December) round. The deadline to register as an organization for the Dec 2023 round is September 1. I thought we’d participate for NeuroFedora packaging again this time (since we’re not planning to do one from our work organization). Are we as Fedora participating in the Dec round?

I haven’t seen a ticket about it on Pagure yet:

I may be wrong here, but I recall that Fedora would typically participate in the May – August round, and not participate in the December – March round. I may not be recollecting this accurately though. Did we participate in either of the last two December rounds in 2021 or 2022?

Yes we did. We applied with one project in 2022 and three projects in 2021. More info about the interns too Outreachy Interns introduction - December 2021 to March 2022 – Fedora Community Blog

If we do the December round this year, I’ll be happy to help out and propose a NeuroFedora related project. (I do GSoC and Outreachy through work in the mid year round which makes it hard for me to also do one through Fedora)

I might be remember a proposal rather than an action. :slightly_smiling_face:

OK. I know the deadline to participate is by 1 September. I am still deep in bookkeeping and accounting work from Flock… unfortunately I will not know whether we can take an Outreachy intern this round until very close to the Outreachy org application deadline.

I am also regularly meeting with @smeragoel and @ffmancera about our Mentored Projects program, including Outreachy, so we can fold this into our check-in call to help make sure it does not fall through the cracks.

Hi @jflory7 : if there’s anything i can do to help with organizing the Outreachy round, please do let me know.

Hey @ankursinha, it is looking like we would have budget for one intern. We can sync on details in #mentoring:fedoraproject.org. Are you in that Matrix room?
