Audio problems after installing VLC and playing around with Alsamixer

Hello!

I have a new laptop with a fresh Fedora 30 install. I decided to install VLC and all was good. Then I rebooted, and the sound was gone. I didn’t get any sound on the speakers or on the audio jack. Reading various posts about troubleshooting audio in linux, I played around with alsamixer… And might have messed something up. Not sure :S… I hope to find someone way wiser than me to set me back on the route to enjoy audio like a normal person.

Anyway, reinstalling VLC brought back the audio, with a couple of twists:

  • I hear my built-in speakers through both of the options visible in the picture. I’m pretty sure that the Digital Output option isn’t supposed to do that…
  • I can only control the volume if I choose “Digital Output”. If I choose “Speakers”, 5% feels like 50%, and anything >=10% feels like 100%.
  • I can’t hear anything through the headphones when I plug them into the audio jack. They also don’t appear as a device.

I have really no idea what is going on. I guess something like resetting all audio settings could work, but I’m not sure how to do that. Any ideas (: ? Thanks!

Ok, so I shut down the computer, went for a walk, came back 2 hours later and the sound was gone again.

I found out that if I run pacmd and then list-sinks, there is one option listed and its index appears to grow with time:
