Being completely honest, I am just fed up with all the bugs that keep coming in Fedora 43 via updates. Mesa, RDSEED32, update causing crash at login screen, etc. This is absolutely not a usable operating system as a daily driver for me personally. I’ve only just realised that older version of Fedora are available for download from the Fedora website (I could only see v43 when I went to download it). Is version 42 more stable and reliable? I am considering giving up with v43 and installing that instead.
In my opinion - absolutely.
I have installed F43 from scratch on several machines, works fine.
whatever one may say, fresh installation will always be safer and better.
My V43 was a fresh install. It’s terrible.
Fedora 43 KDE in my case, just to be precise..
i have instantly installed all the codecs and enabled repos with my script which also runs the initial update:
and enabled the flathub repo.
No issues.
It is a difficult balance between “rolling release” when everything changes all the time and “point release” where nothing changes for months or years. There is also another issue, hardware is too different and complicated so on one end there is too much of reverse engeneering needed and on the other end too few testing.
The good thing about Fedora is bugs and regressions happens but they are also usually fixed. In more “stable” distributions there are less new bugs and regressions but if you are unlucky and you meet one, it would not be fixed unless it is a security emergency, at least until the next release that means a long time.
Fedora supposts two versions at any given time, the latest and the previous one. So in our case it is 43 and 42. If you want to run 41 or previous releases you can but they won’t be upgraded.
I understand your frustration. However, I have not really had anything that is super severe as a problem. First I noticed that thumbnails were not showing up properly on the desktop (I am using the MATE spin). So I Googled and found out that the issue was related to needing glycin-tumbnailer. Installed that and the issue was fixed. Then found out that volumeicon was not working properly as it was running but there was no icon in the panel. My son tracked that down to an issue with bwrap by looking at the error messages. He then found the solution over at Github and applied it. Without him I would not have figured that one out. The next issue was getting AVC Denial messages every single time I would take a screenshot. Somehow that was related to the systemd-homed service, which we disabled and the issue went away. Now the last remaining issue is an AVC Denial message every time I download a PDF. No solution has been found for that and there is a bug report in about it.
Best of luck. I have been on Fedora for some time now and this release seems to be the buggiest I have run into. I do suggest filing bug reports so that someone can get eyes on the problem.
LOL. Since I am still working on the PDF issue I decided to see if it comes up while just copying and pasting a PDF file. Sure enough it did. Related to bwrap and sysadmin. Don’t think it is worth the trouble to worry about it since it is just an annoying message that pops up. But it would be good to find the solution.
Be aware that f42 gets the sane kernel as f43 so the rdseed bug will be in both.
At this point the mesa issue has been fixed.
Are you seeing issues presently with a fully upgrade f43?
Yes many. For example still getting issues with my monitor losing signal. Issues with crashing at login screen. Bluetooth disconnections. Fedora suddenly stopping accepting keyboard input. Honestly the list goes on.
It’s genuinely the worst os I’ve ever experienced. I only installed it less than a week ago. I’ve had more issues in that time than in years of using Windows.
Sounds to me like you have some hardware issues
And I would have to say as a casual user that I have definitely seen more issues with the latest upgrade than I have ever seen before. I don’t know why that is. Were you already on 42? I know you are looking at the threads relating to RSEED32 and that can bring up keyboard issues…
I would suggest filing bug reports for sure.
Wrong. I dual boot with Windows and that works perfectly on this pc. Not one single issue at all.
No. It’s a clean install.
If I was in your situation, since it’s a fresh install, I would give a try to 42. Wait 1 month or two, the time your F42 installation is customized like you want it, and F43 has matured, then upgrade to F43.
Personally, I’m still on F42. I’m waiting the bugs in F43 are stabilized enough to upgrade. Evem on Debian, I don’t upgrade the day the new distro is out. I waited for Debian 13,2 to be released to upgrade from Debian 12.
Yeah. Probably a good idea. Prevviously my son had always done the upgrades for me when new versions came out. Lat time I figured out how to do that myself and there really were not any issues. He might have had to force the Nvidia driver upgrade. This time I saw that the new version was out so I hopped on it and the process went well. Then the issues started cropping up. Right now the only issue I am still working on is just an issue with an SELinux Alert popping up when I download a PDF file. I saw that someone had already reported the same bug, even though they were using Open SUSE. But I am definitely seeing a bunch of people having issues with a lot of things. I do feel lucky that I only have a few issues and that they are (were) fairly minor.
That is correct. With each upgrade comes some problems, usually minor, often several. Sometimes more important e.g. an upgrade to curl removed support for printer config files and suddenly no windows machine on the LAN could print anymore. Solution: reconfigure all windows pcs one by one. Nvidia = high probalility something could go wrong. If you use wine and steam, better uninstall before upgrading and reinstall later.
Yeah, I don’t use wine and steam but my son did run up on that issue. He figured it out of course…
Weird then - evidently something unique to your set-up, configuration and environment, as given the issues you have (like the keyboard ceasing functionality for no apparent reason) would present on here like a scalded cat from multiple people.
What desktop environment or edition did you try?
I’m planning on a clean F43 Workstation install soon; it went fine the last few times though!
Edit: F43 installed and working great!
First thing to do is to apply the patch for the reseed error, as linked in your initial reseed topic. Then let’s see what issues that fixes.
We can help you fix all the issues but we need separate posts for each issue to understand and address them specifically.
Agreed. Take them one by one…
