Workstation background-image transition seems broken out of the box

Hello,

I use Fedora Workstation and I love its beautiful default wallpapers.

I’ve been trying to set up day/night transition using the provided xml:

/usr/share/backgrounds/f44/default/f44.xml

When I set it, it switches wallpapers on time, but the gradual transition doesn’t work. Instead, it immediately switches to the next wallpaper.

This seems to be a GNOME issue IIUC, where it’s only able to do the gradual thing with JPGs, and Fedora’s wallpapers are JXLs. I tried converting the files to JPG and editing the XML accordingly, and it fixed the gradual transition (yay!).

I know the root cause isn’t in Fedora, but it does break a feature that Fedora ships, and there is a way around it by using JPG. I know the wallpaper format topic has been discussed extensively. Personally I don’t care about specific formats; I would just love if the automatic transition worked out-of-the-box.

Would it be possible to ship JPG wallpapers? Could be in addition to the JXLs if they are important to people. Just so the XML transition config can fulfill its task.

Thanks for all the hard work on this release!
