WiFi not working on Dell Latitude 5420 (Intel AX201) - device is UNCLAIMED

Hello everyone,

I’m having trouble getting the built-in Wi-Fi to work on my Dell Latitude 5420 after installing Fedora. The card is an Intel AX201.

The main symptom is that the card is seen by the system, but no driver will attach to it.

The output of sudo lshw -C network shows the wireless controller as *-network:0 UNCLAIMED.

The kernel log (dmesg) consistently shows this error:
iwlwifi 0000:00:14.3: probe with driver iwlwifi failed with error -110

I’ve already tried a lot of things without success:

  • Testing with a live USB (fails there too)
  • Installing several different kernels (new and old)
  • Changing every relevant BIOS/UEFI setting I can find
  • Many modprobe options for iwlwifi
  • A full hardware reset (disconnecting the battery)

Has anyone with a similar Dell laptop run into this? It seems to be a deep firmware or driver incompatibility, but I’m open to any other ideas.

Thanks!

When reporting an issue you want to maximize the chances other users with similar hardware and issues can find your topic. There are many different Dell Latitude 5420 configurations, so please post the output from inxi -Fzxx. We also need to know if you are booting any other OS. Please ensure that vendor firmware and Fedora are fully updated:

  1. so it is easy for others to match your configuration, and
  2. to avoid wasting time on a solved issue

Using dmesg is old-school. It is worth learning to use journalctl if only because it allows you to see entries from previous boots. You can use journalctl --no-hostname --follow in one terminal window while using modprobe to unload and reload iwlwifi. For posting journalctl output, add --no-pager (or "|cat’) to get wrapped lines.
