Wifi Issues with all most recent releases of Linux

My USB WiFi adapter worked just fine on Windows and on LTS Ubuntu and Mint. But because I need Skype for my communication needs and Skype seemed to render those operating systems (the Linux ones) useless and broken, I decided to go to the latest releases and that is when my WiFi disconnecting as soon as I put some serious traffic on it became an issue. I am on quite an old machine. I have used two different USB WiFI adapters and I don’t really know their make and model.

Hi and welcome to :fedora:

Can we start with some information about the machine:
inxi --full --filter --usb --extra 1
or
fpaste --sysinfo-short --printonly
fpaste --sysinfo-usb-verbose --printonly

You want to cut/paste the output using the </> pre-formatted text so it’s more legible.

Thanks

That is your wifi device and should be the focus of the discussion.

As far as I know this is my USB WiFi adapter:

BrosTrend 650Mbps Linux WiFi Adapter for Ubuntu, Mint, Debian, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Zorin, PureOS, Raspberry Pi 2+, Windows 11/10/8/7/XP 5G/2.4G

With the USB vendor and device ID’s you can used the [LHDB}(https://linux-hardware.org) amd USB WiFi by @morrownr to see whether they work with linux.

Your USB WiFi appears in 1360 LHDB probesLHDB. Some users provide workarounds needed for particular host systems or subvendor:subdevice examples.

Support for USB WiFi is generally similar across distros, but because Fedora tends to have recent kernels there are often delays porting drivers for devices that don’t have kernel.org drivers and you may have to build modules on your system each time the kernel changes.

Often the markings on the outside may be misleading.
The system recognizes the hardware (chipset) and reports it as I noted above. The chipset identification is what is used to configure it and to load the proper drivers.

So what should I do next to update the driver for my WiFi adapter?

Note the comment by George (@gnwiii ) just above about the linux hardware database (LHDB) and the many probes there with your adapter.

The probes there are for much older versions of Linux distros, and there is only one failed case of Fedora 37 if memory serves me right. I am thinking of installing tiny 11 now, but I will definitely miss Fedora.

See my adapter works on Linux and the speed is awesome too, but keeps on failing (disconnecting) sometimes that requires me to unplug and replug the adapter.

Do both adapters have this issue? Do they have the same USB ID?

Your WiFi environment may be the cause. I used to teach workshops in student labs where there was a mix of linux and Windows laptops using WiFi. Linux systems were having the issue you describe because the Windows systems default QoS (Quality of Service) setting gave them priority over Linux. When doing network-intensive work we implemented a “buddy” system where two users did the work on one laptop, then repeated it on the second. This had the advantage of reducing the number of typos so fewer people stuck with “it doesn’t work”.

Edit: see kernel.org – Wireless QoS

Yes, both adapters have the same issue. We do not currently have any Windows PCs on the network. All we have is my Fedora 41 Workstation and an android and a couple of iPhones. The iPhones only make use of the network part time.

It may be time to look for a more robust WiFi dongle. USB-WiFi has recommendations.

I went back to Ubuntu 24.04 and the adapter is working with no issue. The Linux kernel team must have broken something recently that both Fedora 41 and Ubuntu 24.10 don’t work with any WiFi adapter.

The only reason I tried the bleeding edge was because the one before broke when I put anything as the startup apps. So I compromised that. Both of these issues are kernel issues that need to be shared with the kernel team.

So, the old kernel causes the system to become unbearably slow once something gets into the list of start-up apps. And the new one doesn’t work with most, if not all WiFi adapters.
