Why Nerd Fonts are not available?

I have noticed Nerds Fonts aren’t provided or available through DNF. Am I supposed to copy the TTF files manually?

A font is just a file that you drop into the .fonts directory (or subdirectory), or click onto the font file and let your desktop environment copy it there (“install”).

In fact, as fonts typically are personal decisions and do not depend on anything else, I think it makes more sense to install them this way then via a package, or even have them packaged, unless another package depends on them or there is some complicated setup involved. Yes, that means we have too many font packages, and I’m guilty of maintaining a few

Also, some fonts may be copyrighted and have restrictive license requirements.

There are various COPRs.

For example, che/nerd-fonts provides one big package with a load of fonts, and aquacash5/nerd-fonts provides various individual font packages.

Other distributions I’ve used had these types of fonts available in their repositories, so I was wondering why they aren’t available through DNF. For now, I just copied the TTF files to ~/.local/share/fonts/.

Licensing or perhaps no-one has thought to package them up specifically for the Fedora repos.

There is embellish which apparently assists you in installing the Nerd Fonts collection, if you really need an application to put files into a directory…

the site doesnt mention a type of license, but i bet it is not free or creative commons use anywhere anyhow as most fonts are

perhaps would be nice to contact the artist who made those fonts and confirm if the fonts could be redistributed or added to the fedora repos, the worst the artist can say is no

apart from that, keep a folder with the fonts you like to customize your desktop or make your written documents and rmemeber to copy them between installations

The code isn’t all MIT.

The ubuntu licence will be an issue when packaging for fedora.

## Licenses found and basic summary of each

* MIT - all good do what you want basically
* CC 4 - share, adapt and change in any format is okay
* SIL OFL 1.1 - free to use, copy, merge, modify, redistribute with conditions: no selling, must contain this original license, must comply to the RFN (Reserved Font Names)
* Apache 2.0 - Basically permissive like MIT but a few things to note. Must include original copyright, note any significant changes to original code, copy of NOTICE file. Modified code does not need to remain under Apache 2.0.
* Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 (CC BY-SA 4.0) - free to share and change. Must give proper attribution. Must distribute under same license. The font itself once patched indeed is.
* Bitstream Vera License v1.00 - do what want, no selling, must rename font.
* Do What The Fuck You Want To - the name summarizes the rules.

or just use brew and install from there. this is how i use my cosmic atomic all what i need comes from brew no layers no issues and all development depencies from mise all lives in user space no issues on mutable or atomic ones

I propose packaging the fonts individually rather than as a single bundle. This allows us to exclude any fonts with licenses incompatible with Fedora.
