White bright borders showing after screen is blank from inactivity

I have a thinkpad t470 and just upgraded to fedora 36. I noticed that after the upgrade when the screen goes blank because of user inactivity, some white bright borders show up in the monitor and they increase intensity if the screen is left blank for a larger period. At first I thought it was a hardware problem, so I downloaded the fedora 35 iso and this doesn’t happen on 35 neither on pop os 22.04 or manjaro. I also tried switching to X11 and disabling the power saving settings, screen lock and so on. The only way this doesn’t happen is if I disable the screen blanking from inactivity. I would really appreciate if someone could help me troubleshoot this problem.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Wait for screen to go blank by inactivity.
  2. Wait a few minutes while the screen is blank.
  3. Wake the system from inactivity and the white borders should appear.

I tried removing the power-profiles-daemon on fedora, but didn’t work.

Does closing the terminal window and opening a new one show any difference?

Unfortunately this does not solve the issue, because the white borders persists on all windows and the desktop. The only thing that removes the borders is if I suspend or reboot the computer.

I installed fedora 35 now and the issue was gone, however after I updated the system the problem came back. I also tried pop os and at first the problem was not happening but after I updated the problem started appearing on pop os as well.

I think it’s a gnome bug with the power management that went upstream to other distros as well.

I have never seen what you show with that image.

I have fedora 36, fully updated, gnome 42.2, xorg, with an nvidia GPU using the nvidia drivers. No special configs of any kind other than the nvidia drivers.

I have tried both gnome-console and the gnome terminal.

I found the problem and fixed. Thanks Jeff for the help.

I downgraded the kernel to version 5.14.10 and it fixed the problem.

Here’s the steps to downgrade the kernel:

  1. Install the kernel version:
sudo dnf install kernel-5.14.10-300.fc35
  1. Reboot and select the kernel 5.14.10 version on grub boot. You have to press shift key on boot to open this menu.

  2. Uninstall the newer kernels you have.

If you want to lock the kernel version so updates don’t override them:

  1. Install dnf versionlock plugin:
sudo dnf install 'dnf-command(versionlock)'
  1. Lock the kernel version
sudo dnf versionlock add kernel-5.14.10-300.fc35
