Wayland and Chromium/Brave GPU acceleration is suddenly broken, videos hella laggy

Fedora 42 KDE with RX 580 GPU, system up-to-date across the board as of this post.

In the last week, some update completely broke Brave’s ability to use my GPU for acceleration/compositing. chrome://gpu shows only software acceleration all the way down the list.

Videos are super laggy. This occurs in both native and flatpak installs of Brave and Chromium browsers. No combination of launch flags will fix it.

No issues in Firefox. No issues with local 4k video files or when playing games.

Switching Brave to X11 using launch flags solves the laggy playback issue and chrome://gpu again shows hardware acceleration working.

HOWEVER the entire rest of the browser becomes a laggy mess with X11… Need Wayland to be fixed.

Yea it appears something in chromium has broken. I’m having issues with Discord/Spotify freezing for a few seconds at a time. I tried a few chromium based browsers and I was also getting the same issues. I tried passing the arg –disable-gpu and that didn’t seem to help. I am running Fedora 43 beta Gnome, with an AMD 7900xt.

KDE F42, Nvidia RTX 2070 running the Nvidia drivers. Installed brave and looked at the GPU flags.

I see the following but playback seems to be utterly fine for me. What are you both seeing that gives cause for concern, other than choppy video playback?

@anothermindbomb When I use X11, my gpu report correctly lists my GPU device ID as 0x67df and driver_vendor as Mesa ACTIVE.

With Wayland, there is no GPU ID, it just says DEVICE=0xFFFF and lists the driver as SwANGLE.

Problem is, I can’t just use Brave in X11 because it gets unbelievably laggy everywhere besides video playback. Scrolling and UI delays up to three seconds.

@wescode Does your about://gpu page show that everthing has fallen back to software rendering?

I concur - looks like you have no support for your RX 580 in Wayland.

Does a driver (AMDGPU might be the name - I’m not sure as I don’t have an AMD gpu) get loaded at all under Wayland - inxi -Gx should tell you.

@anothermindbomb I’m not sure what to do with that command, Terminal says “command not found.”

However, Brave in Wayland mode is the only place where graphics driver ISN’T working. My games all play just fine like always, and there are a few that are VERY sensitive to having the drivers working properly. I can also still play local 4k video files with no issues, and Firefox still plays video streams properly.

It’s just Brave and Chromium that are broken with Wayland.

Question now is, is it Chromium or Wayland that’s broken the connection?

You’ll need to install it - it just collects a load of information about you machine and makes it easy to paste in here. BIOS versions, detected hardware, drivers in use, etc.

However, if you’re seeing good framerates in graphical intensive software like games, we can be reasonably sure it’s getting a driver.

  • Fire up journalctl -f in a terminal to watch the end of the journal log.
  • Start up Brave
  • Play a video
  • Is anything whinging and complaining about not being happy and falling back to software rendering?

It does not, hardware rendering is working. I’m not entirely sure if we have the same issue. Anything that seems to be using chromium/electron lags/freezes. The apps I’ve tested so far are Discord/Spotify/Chromium. All three of those apps will occasionally freeze for 3-5 seconds, then become responsive again. I haven’t been able to figure out what the root cause is because there doesn’t appear to be anything in the logs/journal when it happens. It just started within the past week or so on F43.

I have a similar issue. It started with Signal Desktop, after it upgraded (presumably to a new version of Electron?), now it shows up in chromium as well. It mostly looks like a screen corruption, with green stripes etc.; sometimes the entire desktop environment freezes.

For me the issues went away after downgrading to chromium-141.0.7390.54-1.fc41 with
