Watching movies from the Fandango at Home website

I did a search for this topic and it turned up empty. Has anyone been able to play their movies from the Fandango at Home website? I’ve tried Brave, Google Chrome, and Firefox and I get the same error, “Playback error Unable to stream at this time. Please try a different browser.” I can stream anything from Netflix, Disney+, Prime, etc. without any problems, it’s just on Fandango at Home that I have this problem. I searched on the web and according to the “internets”, playing video from Fandango is “hit or miss” and it’s mostly miss. Any pointers will be greatly appreciated, even if it’s just to confirm that it ain’t gonna work.

I wasn’t able to get it to work personally with Firefox, Brave, or Vivaldi, but at least one person has reported success with Google Chrome: Reddit - Please wait for verification

Maybe double-check that you were using Google’s Chrome package, rather than Chromium?

Thanks dude, I appreciate the help! I have tried Google Chrome and was able to get one movie to at least start playing, didn’t want to watch it all the way through, but none of the other movies/TV series I’ve tried will even start playing. I’ve checked to make sure that Widevine is updated to the latest version in all of them and followed a few howtos about getting it to work but nothing seems to do the trick. One thing that some say helps is to “play the movie in SD format”, most of my movies are either HDX or 4K/UHD and I can’t for the life of me figure out how to change the replay format. Maybe that’s something I can dig around and figure out. The bad thing is, Fandango doesn’t really seem to give a crap about the issue, at least that’s the vibe I’ve gotten from their user forums.

Do you have all the appropriate multimedia codecs installed as shown at

I’ve done the following, right after a clean install:
sudo dnf5 install Making sure you're not a bot!(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm Making sure you're not a bot!(rpm -E %fedora).noarch.rpm

Then ran this to make sure all the appropriate repos were enabled:
sudo dnf5 repolist --all | grep -i fusion

Then ran:
sudo dnf5 swap ffmpeg-free ffmpeg --allowerasing

Upgraded multimedia and core:
sudo dnf5 group upgrade multimedia
Rebooted then ran:
sudo dnf5 group upgrade core

I am seeing some other steps in that howto that maybe I need to run as well? Like the " Hardware codecs with AMD", " Play a DVD", and " Various firmwares"?

This is the wrong syntax for upgrading with dnf5. That is the proper syntax for a group update when using dnf4 (which was replaced with fedora release 41)
Instead use sudo dnf upgrade --refresh which will upgrade the entire system (every affected package) with current (newly downloaded) metadata for packages available.

To upgrade a selected group you would need to know the proper group name (the first column from dnf group list or dnf group list --hidden) then the command would be sudo dnf upgrade @GROUP (if the group is already installed) or sudo dnf install @GROUP (if the group is not already installed).

On KDE there is another group that you might need installed for multimedia support
sudo dnf install @kde-media
I don’t use kde so don’t know what the differences are between kde-media and multimedia groups. When I try to install the kde-media group on my workstation (where I already have the multimedia group installed) I see this long list of packages to be installed.

$ sudo dnf install @kde-media

Is this ok [y/N]:

It looks OK per the documentation ?

dnf5 group {install|remove|upgrade} [options] <group-spec|environment-spec>...

What you show is a throwback to keep dnf5 somewhat compatible with the dnf4 syntax although it now only uses the first column for the group name with either the older syntax or the newer syntax.
Using dnf4 the second column name is required and also is case sensitive while requiring quotes around the group name if it contains spaces.

From the man page for dnf5-install
dnf5 install [options] <package-spec-NPFB>|@<group-spec>|@<environment-spec>...]
and from man page for dnf5-upgrade
dnf5 upgrade [options] [<package-spec-NPFB>|@<group-spec>|@<environment-spec>...]

Note that the syntax as structured the way you show it was an add-on syntax after the initial release of dnf5 to try and make things more similar to the dnf4 syntax that had been around for several years.

While it works as shown, it is easier for me to use the new syntax.

Do yall think I might need to run the commands, that are pertinent to my hardware, in the guide that @computersavvy linked to above? Specifically the “Hardware codecs with AMD”, " Play a DVD", and " Various firmwares"?

Thanks

I’m seeing the same thing with firefox, chrome, chromium, and flatpak chrome.
I don’t think this is a codec problem.

I’ve tried ffmpeg, ffmpeg-free with libavcodec-freeworld and have mesa-va-drivers-freeworld installed.

I tend to agree. I’ve tried everything and still no dice, no matter the browser I try. I’ve looked at other sources, specifically the Fandango at Home forums, and there is, as far as I can tell, no desire by the devs at Fandango to even try to make their streaming service work with Linux. As far as I’m concerned I consider this “case closed” with no resolution. I appreciate everyone’s suggestions/help but I’m not going to pursue this further.

If you do not have an AMD gpu those hardware codecs probably would not assist.
For playing a DVD that is important
The firmware is always recommended, but most can be updated using the command sudo fwupdmgr update
