Hi,
Fedora 43 installed. Nvidia RTX3080 GPU. Intel cpu.
Recently if I sleep my desktop at night, when i go to log back in in the morning the computer wakes but I’m greeted with a black screen. Monitors are still in sleep state (orange power button). Ctl-Alt-F3 wakes the monitors and brings me to a CLI. And, sudo systemctl restart sddm will give me the lock screen from which i can log in.
After my initial install this worked perfectly but stopped working sometime in the last week or two.
I am getting a crash reports lately also from:
plasma-workspace
plasma-drkonqi
systemd
bwrap
etc.

Does pressing Ctrl-Alt-F2 after this not take you to a desktop? Is not then it implies that sddm or something it relies upon has failed to start after the awake event.
Post the output from coredumpctl list | tail -n 30
Adjust that 30 so we get a represetntative list of the programs which are crashing - if its 30 copies of maliit-keyboard then it’s not telling us much, so crank the number up.
As i recall Ctrl-alt-f2 doesn’t help.

Interesting thing is that if i sleep the system and let the monitors go into low power state, then wake the system, it works as expected. Only if I leave it for a long time, for example overnight, do I have a problem.
The crashes you’re getting are almost certainly the by product of the 3080 failing to re-init itself upon resume.
Are you running the rpmfusion drivers or nouveau?
Are these three nvidia services enabled? Double-check the stats of them in systemctl. I can’t imagine them being disables, but never hurts to check.
- nvidia-suspend.service
- nvidia-resume.service
- nvidia-hibernate.service
I presume that if you drop back to an older kernel, this works ok?
These look ok…I think?

But this doesn’t look right. nouveau driver?
lspci -nnk | grep -A 3 -E "VGA|3D|Display"

Kernel driver in use: nvidia
Kernel modules: nouveau, nvidia_drm, nvidia
A kernel update shouldn’t effect the video driver should it? I’m very new to Linux so I’m very unsure of what to expect still.
Nevermind that.

580 driver in use. So I don’t know whats going on wtih sleep. Not the end of the world but would be nice if it worked.
I could drop back to a previous kernel tonight and see what happens in the morning.
All looks fine - I just wanted to make sure you were using the close-source nvidia driver as Nouveau is… interesting. If you were using nouveau we’d get you onto the closed source driver asap so that you had more support, better performance and more chance of getting it to awake properly.
Let’s see what kind of sleep mode you’re currently using - run cat /sys/power/mem_sleep.
My machine returns
┌─🎩 lurcher ~
├─
└─➜ cat /sys/power/mem_sleep 19:51 Wed 25-Feb
File: /sys/power/mem_sleep
s2idle [deep]
and it awakes my 2080 from sleep without any issues. If you get the same output you can try forcing a different level of sleep by giving the kernel a parameter of mem_sleep_default=s2idle and see if this helps things or makes it worse (kinda depends on the mobo, the BIOS, firmware in devices and so on, which is why it’s a bit of a lottery - what works for me is a nightmare for you).
You can add the parameter as a one-off test boot by rebooting, selecting your usual kernel in grub and pressing e. Then add the parameter mem_sleep_default=s2idle to the line containing “linux”; stick it before rhgb as it doesn’t matter where it appears, but it saves you scrolling to the end of the line!
Hit Citrl-X or F10 to boot that kernel with that parameter. Test your sleeping and recovery and if it’s “better” then we can configure things to always add that parameter to every kernel going forward. If it’s no difference, or worse, just reboot and that parameter is gone forever.
Thanks Steve, i’ll try that tonight. Funny thing is that if i put it to sleep and come back in a little while, it will wake with no problems. But when i leave it overnight there’s a 50/50 chance it won’t wake properly the next day. I’ll make sure all apps are closed and see what happens.
OK. After working through this with Claude AI, I “think” it’s fixed (it’s working fine for the last few days). Below is a synopsis created by AI of my symptoms and the steps used to fix it. I wanted to post this in case anyone else has the exact same problems and might be following the thread. Thanks for your help Steve.
Monitors don’t wake from sleep on Fedora KDE with NVIDIA GPU
Symptoms
- After waking from sleep, monitors stay in sleep mode (orange power light)
- Ctrl+Alt+F3 → TTY wakes monitors;
sudo systemctl restart sddm restores lock screen
- nvidia-suspend.service and nvidia-resume.service are enabled and running
- After resume, crash reports from plasmashell, kwin_wayland, xdg-desktop-portal-kde, ksecretd and others
Root Cause
- After resume, KWin (the Wayland compositor) is denied access to the GPU with
Permission denied on /dev/dri/card1
- This is caused by the NVIDIA GSP firmware revoking the DRM authentication token that KWin holds during suspend
- Without compositor access, there is no display output, and the entire KDE session crashes in a cascade
- Fedora does not create the required NVIDIA modprobe config automatically
Fix
- Create
/etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-power.conf with the following content:
options nvidia NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1
options nvidia NVreg_TemporaryFilePath=/var/tmp
options nvidia NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0
- Rebuild initramfs:
sudo dracut --force
- Full reboot:
sudo reboot
- Verify the option was applied:
cat /proc/driver/nvidia/params | grep PreserveVideoMemory
- Should return
PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations: 1
Notes
NVreg_PreserveVideoMemoryAllocations=1 tells the NVIDIA driver to preserve video memory across suspend/resume so the display state can be restored
NVreg_EnableGpuFirmware=0 disables NVIDIA GSP firmware, preventing it from revoking KWin’s DRM access token on resume
- The nvidia-suspend/resume systemd services must also be enabled (they typically are by default on Fedora):
sudo systemctl enable nvidia-suspend.service nvidia-resume.service nvidia-hibernate.service
